Composition and Membership

Peter Saraga

Peter obtained an MA degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) at Cambridge University and an MPhil in Electrical Engineering at Imperial College.

From 1964 to 1992 he worked for Philips Research in the fields of optical character recognition, machine vision for industrial robots, high definition television, liquid crystal display systems, and artificial intelligence.

From 1992 to 2002, he was Director of Philips Research Laboratories UK responsible for major research programmes in displays, wireless communications, and interactive digital television.  He was also a member of the international management team of Philips Research.

Since then he has undertaken a portfolio of non-executive and advisory roles particularly in HE and science policy.

He is a past President of the Institute of Physics, and was a Vice President and Honorary International Secretary of the Royal Academy of Engineering from 2003 to 2009. 

Peter was a member of the Board of Hefce from 2002 to 2008, and chaired the Business and Community Strategic Committee.  He chairs the Hefce Advisory group on Strategically Important and Vulnerable Subjects, and the assessment panel for the UK Research Partnership Innovation Fund.  He chaired the Hefce REF Impact pilot in physics and was a member of the REF physics panel.

He is a member of the Loughborough University Council, a visiting professor at Imperial College and was Vice Chair of Sussex University Council from 2005 to 2011.  He also chairs advisory boards at the University of Surrey, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2002.

He has acted in a number of advisory roles relating to Technology and Science Policy.  In the last few years these have included chairing an International Science benchmarking review at NPL and serving on the mid-term review of the Energy Technologies Institute.  He currently chairs the Advisory Board of the European Ambient Assisted Living programme, and is a director of the Educational Development Trust.

He was awarded an OBE in 2002, and a CBE in 2009.
