Mark Sismey-Durrant

Mark has been a banker throughout his career.

He has been Chief Executive of Hampshire Trust Bank since 2012. This is a new generation bank which specialises in providing commercial finance to UK businesses and it is now based in London. He led a buyout of the bank forming a new management team in May 2014 with the support of Alchemy Partners.

He was formerly a Board Director and Chief Executive of Sun Bank Plc between 1990 and 2001, from where he also served as Board member and Strategic Marketing Director of Sun Life Financial of Canada (UK) Ltd. He oversaw the substantial growth and diversification of the Bank in the UK and Channel Islands before its eventual sale to Portman Building Society. He also stepped in at short notice to manage the life company direct sales force and insurance operations whist continuing to develop the bank.

He joined Heritable Bank Plc, a UK subsidiary of Icelandic bank Landsbanki hf, as Chief Executive in 2002. He successfully launched a range of new banking businesses and grew the bank and its profits in the period leading up to 2008. The failure of the Icelandic banking system in 2008 resulted in administrators being appointed for Heritable, with whom he worked to aid in the recovery of its assets until 2011.

He began his career as a graduate trainee at Midland Bank, where he enjoyed a fast track career through to senior management, working at various times in its retail, commercial and international banking divisions across a full spectrum of disciplines between 1978 and 1990.

In 2014, Mark was appointed for a second time as a Board member of the British Bankers Association and Chair of its Smaller Banks Advisory Board. He is a Court Assistant for the Worshipful Company of International Bankers and until recently chaired its Charity and Education Committee. He was Chairman of the British Icelandic Chamber of Commerce between 2007 and 2010. He has been on the judging panel of the Financial Services Innovation Awards run by the IFS since 2009 and has been its Chairman since 2012.

Mark was elected President of the Alumni Association in 2009 and served for three years. He was appointed to Council in 2009 and served on the Advancement, Finance and Treasury Committees before being appointed Chairman of the Audit Committee in 2012. He currently serves on the Strategic Advisory Board for the School of Business and Economics and is a Trustee of the Loughborough University Development Trust.

Mark graduated from Loughborough with a B.Sc. in Banking and Finance in 1981 and an M.Phil. in 1983, having received two Midland Bank sponsorships. He was a member of Elvyn Richards Hall and represented the University at Cricket.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts and Manufactures and Commerce. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.
