Mathematics with Economics BSc (Hons)
Why I chose Loughborough
Maths at Loughborough offered the broadest and most supportive style of education. Through Clearing I found that my grades met the requirements of Loughborough University and so I was accepted to study Mathematics with Economics BSc on a three year course.
The Maths Learning Support Centre was certainly a key attraction and winning the Times Higher Education award for the Best Student Experience six years in a row made it stand out above other universities for me.
I was nervous that I wouldn’t receive the same treatment as those who chose Loughborough University as their first choice. Instead I believe the opposite happened and I was overwhelmed by the amount of support I received on my first day.
At ease with Accommodation
My fear was mainly about accommodation, as I wasn’t guaranteed a place in the campus halls, which were reserved for students who chose Loughborough as their first choice. However, this process was monitored closely by the Student Accommodation Centre.
I was placed into on-campus temporary accommodation for a week where I was still able to participate fully in the Fresher’s Week. I was affiliated to a hall of residence and didn’t feel like an outsider at all. After that week, I moved into permanent accommodation and continued the three year course as if Loughborough was my new home.
I love being part of the Loughborough Experience. The atmosphere that you have on campus is second to none. The hall spirit and rivalry distinguishes Loughborough from most other universities. The vast range of opportunities to try new things is unbelievable and I have never felt excluded. I've always felt part of a large community.
I also love the challenging nature of my course. It is no longer the school-boy mathematics of learning to pass exams but has become learning how to apply maths to real world situations.
The lecturers are articulate and teach a coherent syllabus. They always have their office doors open to questions and are easily approachable. The Maths Learning Support Centre is very supportive and one of the most useful resources provided by the University. It provides one-to-one assistance for any mathematics related problems and has certainly helped me throughout the degree.
