1909 - Technical Institute established in Loughborough 1915 - Herbert Schofield becomes the first Principal of the Technical College 1916 - Institute begins training munitions workers for the war effort 1920 - Newly renamed Loughborough College granted its own Armorial Bearings 1926 - Construction of an open air swimming pool begins 1937 - Athletics stadium and student-designed sports pavillion opens 1938 - Hazlerigg Hall officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire 1939 - Opening of a new Sports Hall with state-of-the-art swimming pool and gymnasium 1946 - Victory Hall is officially opened, it remains in use today 1958 - Burleigh Estate is bought by the college 1959 - Construction begins on a new student village 1965 - One of the campus' most iconic buildings, The Towers, is opened as a halls of residence 1966 - Loughborough College of Advanced Technology becomes Loughborough University of Technology 1973 - First campus radio station begins broadcasting 1979 - Students' Union building opened by Monty Python's Michael Palin and Terry Jones 1980 - Pilkington Library opens with four times the capacity of the previous library 1983 - An all-weather six lane running track opens, replacing the original pre-war track 1989 - Her Majesty the Queen visits the University - the first royal visit in its history 1994 - The University wins the first of six Queen's Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education 2002 - A new 50 metre swimming pool is opened by the Princess Royal 2006 - Professor Shirley Pearce is appointed as the University's current Vice Chancellor 2006 - Loughborough University is named 'The UK's Best Student Experience' in the Times Higher Education Awards 2008 - Fifty-five past and present students named in Team GB's line-up for the Beijing Olympics 2008 - Loughborough University is named University of the Year in the Sunday Times University Guide 2009 - The University celebrates its Centenary year Loughborough University 1909-2009 - 100 years of education and innovation

    Loughborough University re-enacted 'College Sunday' on 25 October 2009. This was an event which ran from 1920 for over 40 years.
