Hockey draw opens GB women’s points score

Loughborough’s graduates were part of a British team to open their points score with a 2-2 draw against world No2 Argentina.

Jennie Bimson started and Lucilla Wright came off the bench in an exciting match that saw GB turn a two point deficit with a brace of scores in just three minutes.

Argentina, bronze medallists in this event at Athens in 2004, raced into a 2-0 first-half lead through Agustina Garcia and Alejandra Gulla but Team GB battled hard to restrict their opponents to no more goals before half-time.

After the break it was the British who got into the ascendancy after Argentina were reduced to 10 players, and two goals in a thrilling three minute spell earned a valuable point.

Sarah Thomas reduced the arrears following a penalty corner on 49 minutes, and two minutes later Mel Clewlow, on her 250th international appearance, scored the equaliser from another hotly contested penalty corner.

Goalkeeper Beth Storry pulled off several good saves to keep Great Britain in the game as Argentina pressed hard for a winner in the final minutes.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Danny Kerry, also a Loughborough graduate, believes the draw provides the team with a welcome boost.

“Had we lost, my job (as Head Coach) would have been a lot harder in the next match, but as a squad, we can take confidence going into our next game against New Zealand,” he said.

“They play 4-4-2 which will be a change for us tactically. We beat them in Hong Kong in a warm-up match, but obviously that result doesn’t count and you can’t read a lot into it. Great Britain v New Zealand matches are always decided by the odd goal, so this could be a real hum dinger”.
