Wheelchair women out at quarterfinals

Britain’s women’s wheelchair basketball team featuring graduate Clare Strange are out of the Paralympics following a late defeat by Japan.

Finishing bottom of the qualifiers in fourth position Britain faced the group B leaders in the quarter finals. Leading at the end of the first and second quarters, Britain looked in control of the game.

But Japan pulled back the lead in the third quarter to draw with just 10 minutes to go. In the last five minutes Japan turned around the stalemate to win 45-38, scoring 13 points the Britain’s six.

Strange scored seven of Britain’s 38 points, to raise her personal tally in Beijing to 40 as the women matched their achievements of the Athens Games.
