Wainwright is seventh in kayak final

Kayaker Lucy Wainwright finished seventh in the final of the women’s K1 500m race on Saturday afternoon.

Graduate Wainwright, who started slowly in her semi and finished strongly, found the pace of the final tough and struggled to keep pace throughout, passing the 250m point in fifth place.

As the race for medals heated up between Italy, Hungary and the Ukraine, a final effort by Ukrainian kayaker Osypenko Radomska took gold from Josefa Idem of Italy in 1.50.673

By the line Wainwright had dropped back to seventh, in 1.53.102 – two and a half seconds behind Radomska.

“It wasn’t my best race,” said Wainwright. “So I’m a bit disappointed. “I came here wanting to go one better than Athens and I’ve come away with the same, but later down the track I’m sure I will realise what I have achieved.

“Top five would have been good and the form I was in I thought I’d achieve that. It seems to get harder and harder at every Olympic Games, there are so many good girls out there. But at the end of the day I was in an Olympic final.”
