Wainwright paddles to semi finals

Lucy Wainwright battled her way to the semi-final of the women’s K1 500m heat at Shunyi Rowing-Canoeing Park, near Beijing, on Tuesday.

The Loughborough graduate crossed the 250m mark in third place behind the USA and Italy, a boat length clear of the fourth place Chinese paddler Zhong Hongyan.

But Zhong put in a powerful second half of the race and in a sprint for the line finished second behind Italy’s Josefa Idem, with Wainwright edging out Carrie Johnson (USA) to finish third in 1:50.103.

“I had a terrible start, but once I got going and got into my rhythm I tried to do my own race and come through,” said Wainwright.

“Now the race is gone I can get on with the rest of the job. It was hard, all heats at the Games will be hard, but I am pleased with how I did.

“I am feeling in better shape now than I have ever felt, so I hope I can go one step further than in Athens (where she finished seventh in the 2004 Games).”
