Student Hong to referee second Olympic match

Una HongLoughborough student Una Hong will referee her second Olympic football match tonight (12 August) when Nigeria play Brazil at the Workers Stadium in Beijing.

Hong, who hails from Korea and is currently in her third year of a PhD in Sport Policy at the University, has been a FIFA referee since 2003, and has previously officiated at the women’s under-19 and under-20 World Cups.

She has already refereed hosts China against Sweden in one of the first group matches, on Wednesday 6 August, the home nation winning two goals to one.

Beijing is her first senior international appointment and she was delighted to get the call-up.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” she said. “I remember watching the semi finals of the men’s football live at the Seoul Olympics in Korea when I was just eight. And to be involved in the Olympics 20 years later is brilliant.”

Hong is one of 12 referees in Beijing for the women’s football. She was selected from a 100-strong pool of international referees and was named in April after undergoing rigorous trials and monitoring.
