British record for Tancock in backstroke final

Loughborough’s Liam Tancock set a new British record in an outstanding 100m Backstroke performance in the Olympic pool.

The 23-year-old led at the half-way point, turning in 25.11 seconds. A strong second length saw Tancock in the fight for the medals, but the field clawed back his advantage in the final strokes. Tancock touched in a lifetime best of 53.39, a frustrating 0.2 seconds from a podium spot.

Aaron Peirsol of the USA lowered is own world record in the backstroke event to take the Olympic title in 53.46 seconds.

In the 200m Freestyle student Caitlin McClatchey has booked her spot in the final, qualifying seventh fastest in 1:57.73. British team mate Jo Jackson, who is currently based at Loughborough, was outside the top eight, finishing in 1:58.70.
