Simmonds sets British record in heats

Loughborough University swimmer Lizzie Simmonds has qualified second fastest for tomorrow’s 200m Backstroke semi finals in a new British record.

The 17-year-old, who has already set a new club record in the 100m Backstroke this week, added the British best over 200m with a time of 2:08.66, breaking the previous record set by Katy Sexton at the World Championships in 2002. Zimbabwean Kirsty Coventry qualified fastest and lowered the Olympic record to 2.06.76.

Florida University’s Gemma Spofforth, who bases herself at Loughborough when in the UK, also qualified in the same event, just making the final cut in 16th in 2:10.58.

400m Freestyle champion Rebecca Adlington returned to the pool this evening for her favourite event – the 800m Freestyle, and set a new Olympic record to qualify fastest for Saturday's final in 8.18.06. The Nova Centurion trains at Loughborough three times a week with her coach Bill Furniss.

"I didn't expect that at all," she said in disbelief. "I can't believe that time, I'm very happy - it is going to be a good race on Saturday. I knew it was going to be a fast race and I couldn't afford to sit back.

“I wasn't as strong on the last 400m as usual but I worked off the other girls and finished well. I'm now looking forward to the final.”
