Rooney and Turner through to sprint semis

Martyn Rooney won his 400m heat to qualify seventh fastest into tomorrow evening’s semi final on a day that four Loughborough athletes were in action at Beijing’s Olympic Stadium.

Rooney won his heat in 45 seconds flat, while training partner David Gillick - competing for Ireland in a separate heat, was just outside qualification, finishing fourth in 45.83 seconds.

“The win was the most important thing, to get a good lane in the semi-final," said 21-year-old Rooney. "It felt pretty good.

“I'm a bit rusty as I haven't raced for a while but I have another race on Tuesday and it's a step towards the final.

"To race in this stadium for the first time is amazing. It's an amazing track, an amazing stadium and I just have to try and take advantage of it and see how it goes."

In the 110m hurdles, graduate Andy Turner had to keep focused, running in the same heat as World Record holding Dayron Robles. The Sale Harrier held his form well to take second place in 13.56 behind the Cuban, in what might have been a distracting scenario.

“I’ve raced with him a few times, so you know he’s going to come out and run quick,” he said.
“But I just have to take care of my own business and I’m happy to have qualified.”

Fellow alumnus Nathan Douglas failed to progress in the triple jump with a best mark of 16.72m. Douglas, who has had a year of battling with injury was disappointed with his turn in Beijing.

“It’s been very, very hard – a struggle with injury – but it goes to show I wasn’t up to scratch,” he admitted. “I’m not one of those people who are just happy to be here. I’ve been here before and now I want to go to the next level.”
