Second chance for Rooney in 400m relay

Martin Rooney has a second stab at the Olympic podium tomorrow after helping qualify Britain’s 4x400m team to the final.

Rooney, who finished sixth in last night’s individual 400m final, led the Brits home in a season’s best at tonight’s qualifier for the team event.

Running last, Rooney saw his team, which also included Andrew Steele, Robert Tobin and Loughborough-based Michael Bingham, sail home first of the field in 2:59.33.

In the women’s 4x400m, Nicola Sanders was part of a British quartet to qualify for tomorrow’s final. The team finished third in their heat with season’s best of 3:25.48.

"I was a little bit nervous but I was pleased to give Kelly a good position," said Sanders, who ran an opening first-leg split of 50.80 seconds.

Graduate Lee McConnell, who reached the 400m individual semi-finals, pulled out of the relay team because of an injury. The 29-year-old has suffered a quad muscle tear in her right leg during the second round of the individual 400m competition.

Also in relay action tonight was graduate Jeanette Kwakye in the 4x100m sprint event. Running first for Britain Kwakye put her team in a strong position at the bend, but a misjudged handover between Montell Douglas and Emily Freeman at the final leg saw the women out of medal contention.

"It's devastating,” said Kwakye. "We've practiced and worked so hard. It was a medal for us but hopefully we'll bounce back."
