University record for McClatchey

Caitlin McClatcheyLoughborough student Caitlin McClatchey set a new University record in the 200m Freestyle heats this evening to secure her spot in tomorrow’s semi finals.

McClatchey finished second in her heat in 1:56.97 to break one minute 57 seconds for the first time in her career, while Loughborough-based Joanne Jackson – fresh from her bronze medal performance in this morning’s 400m Freestyle – also eased through to tomorrow’s semi-finals.

“It’s a personal best time and into the semis, so it’s a great start,” said McClatchey. “What the girls did this morning [Jackson’s bronze and Rebecca Adlington’s gold in the 400m freestyle] was so inspiring, and this result fills me with confidence.”

Jackson added: “I found that tough after this morning, but it gets me into the semi-finals. I need to recover now and get into shape for the next phase.

“It’s been such an emotional day after the medal and I now need to focus again. This morning was amazing but I feel there’s more to come.”

Jackson goes in semi-final one, scheduled for 10:03 local time (03:03 BST), with McClatchey lining up alongside Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, who set a world record time of 1:55.45 in the heats, in semi-final two directly afterwards.

Student Liam Tancock is also in action tomorrow morning, and will be targeting a medal in the 100m Backstroke final.
