Fast LEAP meet for Beijing hopefuls

Three Olympic A standards and a British record fell at Loughborough University’s LEAP meet last night as athletes battled for qualification to next month’s Games.

British sprinter Montell Douglas (Blackheath and Bromley Harriers) broke a 27-year-old national standard to qualify for the individual 100m spot at next month’s Beijing Olympics.

The 22-year-old set a time of 11.05 seconds in a just-legal +2.0 m/s wind, after running 10.95 in today’s heats with a fast 2.6m/s tailwind. In setting the new British record she knocked almost quarter of a second off her previous best (11.28).

“I feel amazing, I just can’t explain it,” she said. I’ve been on edge the whole week, I’m just so relieved. I put a lot of pressure on myself to perform here today, this was my Olympic Trials.

“After the heats I knew I was in good shape and all I was aiming for was to beat the others in the Olympic qualifying time. I didn’t even think about the British record. I tried to do something special here and I’ve showed selectors I can do it.”

Alongside Douglas, hurdlers Sarah Croxton and Allan Scott also achieved Olympic A standards at the 11th hour meet – just one day before final selection is allowed. Croxton (Woodford Green and Essex) was 0.01 seconds outside the British record as she achieved an ‘A’ time of 12.81 in the 100m hurdles and Scott (Shaftsbury and Barnet) finished the men’s 110m event in 13.41.

In other events Loughborough-based Mike Bingham, who has already secured his Olympic spot in the 4x400m relay, dipped below the 46-second mark in the 400m to win in 45.91 seconds and graduate JJ Jegede won the men’s long jump with 7.16m.
