Loughborough’s best on form at Beijing Trials

Student Martyn Rooney was one of eight Loughborough University athletes to claim gold at the Aviva National Championships and Olympic Trials in Birmingham at the weekend.

Rooney won the 400m in 45.31 seconds, two tenths within the Olympic qualification standard, to secure his spot on Team GB for the Beijing Games.

Graduate Lisa Dobriskey, who continues to be based at Loughborough with coach George Gandy, secured gold over 1500m in 4:15.84 and top British pole-vaulter Steve Lewis reinforced his supremacy with the number one spot, beating his nearest rival by a clear 30cm.

Steph Pywell achieved a season’s best on the way to gold, clearing 1.88m, while Loughborough-based Helen Clitheroe set a British record of 9:36.98 in the 3000m steeplechase.

Loughborough graduates Jeanette Kwakye (100m), Emeka Udechuku (Discus) and Goldie Sayers (Javelin) all claimed gold in their respective events, both women within the Olympic A standard.

Sara McGreavy (110m Hurdles) and Vicky Barr (400m) earned silver while Laura Kenny (5000m), Rosie Semenytsh (Javelin), Chris Warburton (1500m) and Leon Baptiste (200m) all gained bronze.

Other finalists included Becky Peak (4th Shot put), Sarah Holt (5th Hammer), Justine Kinney (6th 400m Hurdles), Dominic Gurdler (7th 110m Hurdles), Harry Aikines-Aryeety (6th 100m), Samson Oni (4th High jump) and Charlotte Best (4th 800m).
