Hong to referee Olympic semi final

Loughborough student Una Hong has been selected as the referee in the Olympic women’s football semi final between Germany and Brazil.

Hong, who is doing a PhD in Sport Policy at Loughborough, has already refereed two Olympic matches in Beijing – between hosts China and Sweden, and Nigeria and Brazil.

“It’s a dream come true to referee an Olympic semi final,” she said. “I’ve had two good matches here which I’ve really enjoyed, but I didn’t really expect to be selected for the semis. Brazil and Germany are the best teams in the world.

“To referee the opening match of the Games, which involved the home team was brilliant and the atmosphere was something else. At the second match there were 51,000 spectators. It’s great to be at the Olympics, it’s fantastic experience for me.”
