New training programme benefits Graduate Sayers

Goldie SayersLoughborough graduate Goldie Sayers has laughed off an eventful journey to the Team GB preparation camp in Macau, with the assertion that she is in the best form of her life.

Sayers was forced to stay in Hong Kong when a typhoon halted Ferry traffic to Macau feels that despite the blip in her journey, her preparations so far have been her best ever.

Ranked amongst the world’s top javelin throwers going into the Beijing Olympic Games means Sayers has a confidence boosting season under her belt in the approach to her second Games, and her last few weeks work has been just as encouraging.

“The sessions have gone really well, and I’ve been close to and matching my maximum weights in my conditioning work,” she said.

“I’ve also done a lot more delivery work this year and it’s really showing with my throws in training. I have increased my training personal best by three and half metres – making it one of my best ever throws.”

Sayers, who competed in Athens in 2004 has seen significant improvements in her performances since linking up with her coach - former GB javelin thrower Mark Roberson - in September 2006.

“Mark and I have really worked well together. He has really helped with the conditioning side of my training, which could be because we used to train together and he understands my strength and knows my frame.

“He just missed out on making an Olympic Games as a competitor, but having him here as my coach is great because this is definitely a joint effort.”

Goldie is in Olympic action on Tuesday 19 and Thursday 21 August.
