Sixth spots for swimmers in finals

Dave CarryUniversity swimmers were in action in two freestyle finals this morning with the men’s 4x200m team setting a new British Record.

Loughborough’s Ross Davenport and Dave Carry were agonisingly close to a medal in this morning’s relay final as team USA set another world record in the pool. In a bid for the podium the team claimed another British record, knocking a further two seconds off the best they set last night with a time of 7:05.92.

Britain finished sixth in a fast race that saw Russia and Australia join USA in the top three spots.

"The plan was to swim as fast as possible which we did and we've managed to raise our game again which is good,” said Carry. “We have been on a fantastic journey over the past few years and it's been a privilege to work with these guys."

“We thought we could do it, we believed we could do so it's a bit devastating but we have lowered the GB record here by something like six seconds and we are a young team," added Davenport.

Swimming in the women’s 200m Freestyle final this morning student Caitlin McClatchey was off the personal best she set this week and finished sixth in another world-beating race. McClatchey finished in 1:57.65, while winner Federica Pellegrini clocked the fastest ever time of 1:54.82.

"I'm pretty pleased with that,” said McClatchey. “The medals all went to times under the old world record so it was a massive ask to be among them. My aim in this event was to improve and lower my time so in that sense it's been a success. The relay is big event for the team and we've shown we are swimming well. This teams doing a great job and I'm proud to be a part of it."
