Davies ready for open water debut

David DaviesUniversity-based swimmer David Davies is relishing the opportunity to compete at the inaugural Olympic 10k open water in two weeks time.

The 23-year-old is one of three Team GB swimmers taking place in the marathon swim on Thursday 21 August at the Olympic Rowing Park.

Davies, who will also contest the 1500m freestyle in the pool, is a relative newcomer to the open water version of the sport, but has quickly established himself as Britain’s leading endurance swimmer.

“You’re all swimming in a pack, compared to the pool where you get a lane to yourself,” he explains. “So you are on top of each other and you do get the odd fist in your face, but I really enjoy it.

“It’s a very demanding endurance-based event. It’s the first time that open water has featured in the Olympic programme and it is well deserved.

“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done with adapting to the sheer physicality of it, and it can be hard to swim in a straight line without a blue line on the bottom!

“The physicality is part of the sport, you’ve just got to take it and move on. In the last couple of races I’ve tried to go from the front to stay out of trouble a bit.

“But I am a novice as far as this event goes, so there’s not really any pressure on me. It’s a great thing for me to do after the pool competition has finished.”
