Sixth spot for West in Discus final

Loughborough-based athlete Dan West has finished sixth in the Paralympic discus final on the opening night of action at the Beijing Birds Nest.

Competing in a group that included athletes with more severe disabilities, where performances were awarded points for proximity to their respective world records, West’s throw of 37.38m kept him out of the medals at his fourth Paralympic Games.

In the sailing student Hannah Stodel, with GB team mates John Roberston and Stephen Thomas, finished third in the second round of races in the three person keelboat. The trio were ninth in this morning’s race and will be hoping to boost their rank in tomorrow’s round three race.
