Badminton players enjoy Olympic preparation in Loughborough

Britain’s Olympic badminton players have completed a 12-week training programme at Loughborough University as part of their final preparations ahead of the Games.

Five Team GB players – Olympic silver medallists Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms, Anthony Clark, Tracy Hallam and Loughborough graduate Donna Kellogg have spent consecutive Fridays at the University’s world class badminton facility and have received additional support from Loughborough high performance coach Mike Adams.

The preparation programme, which was based at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes and utilised selected centres across the UK including Loughborough, is designed to give Britain’s players the best chance of success at the Beijing Olympics and was split into three four-week phases; Bronze, Silver and Gold

Loughborough coach Adams was delighted to be involved with the British team and see more of the country’s best players benefit from the University’s bespoke facilities.

“Anthony and Donna train regularly at Loughborough when they’re in the country, but to have the whole Olympic squad here raises the profile of badminton at the University to a new level,” he said. “It’s also pleasing for me that Donna Kellogg, who opened the badminton centre and is a former sports scholar, will be competing in the Olympics and has a realistic chance of a medal”

The squad is now in Macau at the Team GB holding camp and will move to the Olympic village on 5 August. Badminton runs from 9-17 August.
