Avil awaits Olympic debut...and A level results

Hollie AvilLoughborough-bound Hollie Avil makes her Olympic debut this month just days after receiving the results of her recent A levels.

The 18-year-old, who regularly trains with the squad at the University, sat her exams earlier in the year, with the dreaded results envelope due to drop onto the doormat at her Northampton home next Thursday (14 August).

The following day will see Avil – along with her Loughborough based triathlon team-mates Will Clarke and Tim Don, and two others - Alistair Brownlee and Helen Tucker – arrive in Beijing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

But for now it is one hurdle at a time for the youngster, who is the sport’s reigning junior world and European champion.

“At the moment I am a bit nervous because my ‘A’ level results come out next week,” she said from the triathlon team’s training base in Jeju, Korea.

“In fact, I am probably more concerned with that at the moment than the Olympics, which is probably a good thing as I’m thinking about that rather than worrying about my race.”

The youngest member of Team GB’s triathlon squad, Avil competed in her first triathlon in September 2005 and has progressed rapidly onto the world stage.

“I’ve shot through the development stages, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind,” she said. “I come from a swimming background and had also done quite a bit of running, and I just fancied giving triathlon a go.

“It’s really exciting. This time last year I hadn’t even thought about going to the Olympic Games, and now here I am.

“There’s no real pressure or expectation on me. I just need to concentrate on my performance and making sure I am able to give 100 per cent. That said, I am not just going for the experience, I am going to race.”

With exams and Olympic Games August is set to be an exciting month for Hollie Avril. She hopes to pass both with flying colours.
