Lifetime best sees Kwakye through to finals

Loughborough graduate Jeanette Kwakye has set a lifetime best to qualify for the final of the women’s 100m.

Kwakye finished third in her heat in 11.18 seconds to book her berth at tomorrow’s Olympic final.

I’ve worked all year for this,” she said. “I knew I would have to run PBs in all the rounds to progress. It’s brilliant but I had a tough year coming out of the indoor season.”

Meanwhile graduates Nicola Sanders and Lee McConnell have both qualified for the 400m semi finals. Sanders finished second in her heat in 51.81 while McConnell was just behind in her heat to finish third in 51.87.

Kate Dennison matched her season’s best of 4.40m in the qualifying rounds of the women’s pole vault to finish seventh in her heat of 18. Achieving the height on her third attempt, she needed an extra 10cm to make it to the next round.

In yesterday’s 3000m Steeplechase, Helen Clitheroe set a new British record to finish sixth in her heat in 9:29.14, and Barbara Parker was 12th in 9:51.93. Neither were fast enough to progress to the next round.
