Medley pair through to semis

Liam TancockLoughborough pair Liam Tancock and James Goddard are through to tomorrow’s 200m Individual Medley finals.

Tancock was top two for most of his heat but faded over the final 50m to touch in fourth in 1.59.79, while two heats later Goddard finished fifth just five-one hundredths of a second ahead of his team mate in 1.59.74.

The times put the pair in 13th and 14th position and both mist raise their game to compete in tomorrow’s semi final.

“It’s my first swim and I felt rusty,” admitted Goddard. ”It’s over now, I'll refocus and get up for tomorrow. I was excited to be next to Phelps, he's on his way to becoming the best of all time, but I was only focused on my race. My aim here is to take every round as it comes and that's what I'll do.”

“Coming in off the backstroke felt different, It wasn't smooth,” added Tancock. ”The first half of the medley is my strong point and I tried to use that well. There are some amazing guys in that event and tomorrow is going to be tough.”

Student Mel Marshall and Loughborough based swimmer Jo Jackson were within a quartet racing for Britain in the 4x200m Freestyle heats. But their time of 7:56.16 was only good enough for sixth in their heat and ninth overall, halting their progress to the finals.
