Medley Pair miss medals while Simmonds secures final spot

James GoddardJames Goddard and Liam Tancock were unable to improve on their heat swims and finished out of the medals in today’s 200m Individual Medley final.

The pair would have needed sub-1:57.00 lifetime bests to reach the podium in a fast race that saw winner Michael Phelps of the USA lower his own world record by more than half a second.

Goddard was first of the Brits to finish, touching home in 1:59.24 in sixth, while Tancock was eighth in 2:00.76.

In the only other event of the morning featuring Loughborough swimmers, Lizzie Simmonds secured her berth in the next round, where she will make her Olympic final debut.

The 17-year-old was just off the British record she set in yesterday’s heats as she touched third fastest in her heat in 2:08.96 to progress to the finals ranked seventh.

University of Florida’s Gemma Spofforth, who trains at Loughborough when in the UK, finished the semis just behind Simmonds in 2:09.19, but was ranked ninth overall - 12 hundredths of a second off making the final.
