Under the leadership of newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor
Shirley Pearce the
University has far reaching plans for the future and faces many challenges
ahead. The
strategic plan for the period 2007 - 2012 is currently being
developed and includes some ambitious goals. In 2008 the University
is anticipating an excellent result in the Research Assessment Exercise
which will confirm our status a world class research intensive institute. This
emphasis on research can also been seen in the additional support
being provided for the University’s growing postgraduate population
through the newly established Stewart Mason Postgraduate Centre among
other initiatives.
Over
the next few years the campus will change significantly to accommodate
the steady growth of the University. The Health,
Exercise & Biosciences Building will begin construction in 2007
and it marks the first step in the exciting East Park development
project. This development will transform the East Park part
of campus over the next ten to twenty years creating four new 'zones'
- residential, academic, cultural and leisure, with new academic
space and student accommodation provided. This major development
overlaps with the work being undertaken in the west area of campus. Here
the developing Keith Green Building will provide additional teaching
and office space, housing the Engineering Centre for Excellence in
Teaching and Learning and the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme
among others.
Having played a key role in the East Midlands' regional support
for London's 2012 Olympic bid, University staff and students
are looking forward to contributing to a successful Games. With
perhaps the best integrated sports development environment in the
world, the University’s performance sport training facilities
will primarily be utilised for Great Britain’s potential Olympians
and Olympic squads to train ahead of the Games. International
squads from around the world are also expected to make use of Loughborough’s
training facilities for preparation and acclimatisation in the run
up to the event.
As we celebrate our rich heritage the University is looks forward
to a bright future. In 2009 the celebrations will continue
as we commemorate 100 years as an educational institution.
