Chancellors John Jennings Denis Rooke Arnold Hall Lord Pilkington

Lord Pilkington (b. 1905 d. 1983)

Lord Pilkington was the first Chancellor of the University.  He was Chairman of Pilkington Brothers, glass manufacturers, from 1949 - 1973.  He was at various time President of the Confederation of British Industries and chaired a number of Royal Commissions, national advisory councils, and public enquiries.

Sir Arnold Hall (b. 1915 d. 2000)

A Fellow of the Royal Society, who at the time of his appointment was Chairman and Managing Director of the Hawker Siddley Group.  Sir Arnold had been Professor of Aviation and Head of the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College, London and Director of the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough.

Sir Denis Rooke (b. 1924)

Sir Denis was educated at Westminster City School and Addey and Stanhope School, and at University College London, from which he graduated in Mechanical and Chemical Engineering.  He served in 1944 with REME in India and Britain, and was promoted to Major.  Sir Denis was Chairman successively of the Gas Council, the British Gas Corporation and British Gas PLC from 1976 until his retirement in June 1986.  A nationally known figure, Sir Denis is admired not only for his contributions to the business world but also for his active support of developments in higher education, particularly as Chairman of the Council for National Academic Awards.  Sir Denis was also President of the Fellowship of Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Society.  He was awarded a CBE in 1970 and knighted in 1977 for his service to the gas industry. In 1997 he was appointed to the Order of Merit.

Sir John Jennings (b. 1937)

Installed as Chancellor in July 2003, Sir John Jennings, CBE, FRSE is the former chairman of the Shell Transport and Trading Company plc.  Sir John was educated at Oldbury Grammar School and Birmingham and Edinburgh Universities, gaining a BSc in Geology in 1958 and a PhD three years later.  He was also Sloan Fellow at the London Business School.  Sir John joined Shell in 1968, where he worked in a variety of posts in the UK and abroad, becoming Managing Director of Shell UK Exploration and Production Ltd in 1979 and Exploration and Production Coordinator for Shell International in 1984. He was Managing Director of the Royal Dutch Shell Group from 1987 to 1997 and Chairman of the Shell Transport and Trading Company plc from 1993 to 1997. Sir John was a Director of the company between 1987 and 2001.  He received an Honorary DSc from the Universities of Edinburgh in 1991 and Birmingham in 1998, and has been a member of the governing bodies at the London Business School and the University of Exeter.
