Alumna shortlisted for a British Council Alumni Award in Ghana
Loughborough University alumna, Dr Mavis Asare, has been shortlisted for a highly sought-after British Council Alumni Award in Ghana.
The awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of alumni who have studied in the UK in the last 15 years and highlight the impact and value of a UK education. This year, there were over 1700 applications made from alumni in 123 countries.
Loughborough University is delighted to see alumna, Dr Mavis Asare, shortlisted for a British Council Alumni Award. Mavis is shortlisted for the Entrepreneurial Award, which highlights alumni who have played a leading role in business innovation.
Upon returning to Ghana, Mavis took up a position as a Senior Lecturer at the Methodist University College Ghana. In her voluntary activities, Mavis is working with the Progressive Life Center (NGO), other professionals, speakers and famous personalities to encourage young people to stay in school.
Mavis worked to encourage students to develop learning and expressiveness skills. She conducts health maintenance programmes for young people focussed on identifying mental health problems. The “Mental Health Education initiative” has since reached 60 schools in the Greater Accra and Central Regions of Ghana and is showing improved results in students’ mental status and their studies. Mavis also collaborated with The Ghana Aids Commission to set up a "Behaviour Change in the Prevention of HIV/AIDS" Programme for young people.
In addition, another of her voluntary roles is as a Media Consultant on Sport Psychology Issues. She regularly acts as a mentor and speaker, seeking to inspire by sharing her personal experiences and knowledge.
Dr Mavis Asare graduated with a PhD in Sport and Exercise Health Sciences from Loughborough University in 2013.
The awards will take place in a range of destinations worldwide over the next year.
