Professor Steve RothbergSteve Rothberg is Professor of Vibration Engineering and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. With a first degree and a PhD from Southampton University, he joined the academic staff at Loughborough in 1990 as an industrially funded lecturer.

His research is conducted in collaboration with companies in the instrumentation, sporting goods and automotive sectors and his efforts in developing laser technology for vibration measurements have attracted awards from the National Physical Laboratory and the Society of Experimental Mechanics.

He is the academic lead for the university’s Centre for Engineering and Design Education, part of his longstanding commitment to innovation in teaching that includes founding the original Centre in 1997.

In 2007, after 6 successful years as Head of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Steve became Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

Working with industry featured prominently in these roles; as Head he led the development of a consortium-sponsored manufacturing engineering degree programme and, as Dean, he led the Loughborough team on the Manufacturing Technology Centre project.

During this time, he also led diverse institutional projects including the first campus-wide staff survey, the ATHENA Swan award submission and the development of the University’s first ethical policy framework.
