Health, Safety and Environmental Management at Loughborough University

At Loughborough University, the Health & Safety Management function and the Environmental Management function are two separate, but overlapping services, which report into the University’s Health, Safety & Environment Committee.

Health and Safety Office

The Health & Safety Office provides an advisory service to Academic and Service Departments covering all aspects of occupational safety, fire, occupational health, radiological protection, emergency procedures and insurance issues arising from incidents which are occupationally related.

Responsibilities

  • The Health and Safety service oversees regulatory compliance through audit and by liaison with regulatory bodies including HSE, Fire, Environment Agency and Home Office (for statuary returns on Chemical Weapons and Drug Precursors).
  • The Health and Safety Service provides advice to duty holders concerning the hazardous properties of waste and best practice in storage and handling.
  • The health and safety office monitors arrangements for dealing with chemical  radiation biological incidents
Environmental Management

Environmental Management is delivered as part of the Environmental Sustainability infrastructure through a team of staff within Facilities Management. This team covers all aspects of Environmental and Sustainability Management including Waste & Recycling Management (Controlled, Hazardous and Clinical), Emissions to Air & Discharges to Water, Travel & Transport, Carbon Management, Energy & Water, Construction & Refurbishment, Biodiversity and Procurement.  The Environmental Sustainability web pages are here (Environmental Sustainability).

Environmental Management Responsibilities

  • Development and maintenance of a legal register for Environmental compliance and liaison with regulatory bodies
  • Supporting the development and delivery of the Environmental Policy
  • Delivery of the Waste Management Strategy
  • Providing policies, procedures and guidance to ensure environmental compliance and pollution prevention
  • Engagement and liaison with teaching and research staff, students and other environmental related groups to support the practical adoption and implementation of innovative environmental ideas on campus
  • Supporting the development, management and maintenance of appropriate environmental management monitoring systems, surveys and audit processes and their incorporation and integration into existing management systems
  • To support the University’s officers, committees and stakeholders in their efforts to adopt sound and sustainable environmental management practices
  • Reporting to the H,S & E Committee on all Environmental Management Matte
