The Minutes of the sixty third meeting of the Committee held
on 10 November 2004
(P04-M2) were confirmed.
It was noted that Senate and Council had APPROVED:
i) the establishment of the following prizes:
· Adidas-Saloman Sports Technology Prize
· Drama with a Minor in English Prize
· Mavis Prize for Music
· Pick Everard Prize

ii) amendments to the following prizes:

The Prizes Committe AGREED to approve the appointment of above assessors.
The Committe noted that the Executive Management Group (EMG) had given its strong support to the establishment of three Postgraduate Research Prizes, one for each Faculty. It was also noted that the criteria for the award of the prizes are currently being drafted and that the source of funding for these prizes is yet to be confirmed. It was suggested that upon agreement of the criteria and confirmation of the funding an assessor panel be established which will be made up of an Associate Dean(Research) (ADR) from each Faculty ACTION SECRETARY. It was noted that all of this should be completed and finalised in time for the prizes to be awarded in November 2005.
It was noted that £500 has been secured to fund the production of prize certificates to be used when awarding University and Departmental prizes.
The Committe considered and agreed upon a design for the prize certificates. The Committee suggested that a signature of an appropriate member of the University, for example the Vice-Chancellor, be added to the Prize Certificate. The Secretary AGREED to investigate the feasibility of this.
It was noted that the vacant Prizes Committee post
of a Faculty of Science representative had been filled.

The Committee considered the establishment of the Hannah Community Prize, to
a total value of £180, to be awarded to students of Loughborough
University in recognition of contribution towards local community life, acts of
kindness or good neighbourliness.
The prize(s) may be awarded to an individual student, specific
groups of students or student households.
The recipient(s) of the Hannah Community Prize to be selected by the T S Shipman Assessor Panel
It was AGREED to recommend the establishment of the above prize to Senate.
The Committee also considered the
nomination process and AGREED that members of the local community would be
invited to nominate a student using a Nomination Form available from the
University Prizes website or in hard copy format. It was also AGREED that the prize should be publicised, and
nominations sought, in as many publications as possible; including the
Community Newsletter, local paper, Student Union Magazine (Label). ACTION SECRETARY

The Committee considered the establishment of the Dennis Holt Travel
Scholarship to the value of £400 to be awarded to student of Loughborough
University School of Art and Design (LUSAD). Students should submit
a proposal stating the purpose for which the scholarship would be used
and what would be achieved through the proposed travel as well as a supporting
academic reference. The prize will be
awarded to a student or students who in the opinion of the Assessor Panel has
made significant progress during his or her course; whose work shows a high
degree of originality; and who has submitted the most meritorious proposal.
The recipient will be selected by the Dennis Holt Travel Scholarship Assessor Panel, consisting of:
· 2 members of academic staff from LUSAD
· 1 member of academic staff not from LUSAD
Membership of the panel will be for a three year period and will be approved by the Prizes Committee.
It was AGREED to recommend the establishment of the above prize and Assessor Panel to Senate.
P04P3/P04-P4
At the request of the Department of Information Science the Committee
considered the establishment of the following prizes:
i) Unilever
Second Year Prize, to the value of £150, to be awarded to the second
year student with the most improved academic performance on the BSc Information
Management and Business Studies Programme.
ii) Unilever Final Year Prize, to the value of £150 to be awarded to the final year student with the best overall academic performance in the final year of the BSc Information Management and Business Studies Programme.
It was AGREED to recommend the establishment of the above prizes to Senate.

The Committee considered the amendment of the T S Shipman Assessor Panel from:
· 2 University Members Approved by Senate
· 1 External Member, Deputy Chief Executive, Charnwood CVS, John Storer House Ex Officio
to:
· 1 University Member, for a three year period Approved by Prizes Committe
· 1 Community Warden (also a University Member), for a three year period Approved by Prizes Committe
· 1 External Member, Deputy Chief Executive, Charnwood CVS, John Storer House Ex Officio
· 1 Member from the Local Community (a Charnwood Resident who is not a member of the University) for a three year period Nominated by Community Wardens - Approved by Prizes Committe
To allow the amended T S Shipman Assessor Panel to asses nominations for
the Hannah Community Prize
It was AGREED to recommend the above amendment of the T S Shipman Assessor Panel to Senate.
The Committee was informed that following a meeting, where
unused departmental endowed funds were discussed, certain endowed funds had
been renamed and merged. It was also
noted that these new endowed funds can be used by the relevant departments to
fund the award of current prize(s) or the establishment of a new prize(s). The Committee considered how departments
should be informed of these amendments and AGREED that relevant Head of
Departments should be informed that a new endowed fund had been set up, the
value of the fund, and the income value.
Head of Departments should then be asked to confirm if the new endowed
fund would be used to fund the award of a current prize(s) or the establishment
of a new prize(s). Heads of Departments
would be requested to confirm which prize(s) are to be funded, or to submit a
request for the establishment of a new prize(s). ACTION SECRETARY
The Committee noted that IMI prize is no longer
awarded by the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
The
