Subject:        Establishment, Amendments and Discontinuation of Prizes and Prize Assessor Panels

 

Origin:           Unconfirmed Minutes of the 64th  Meeting of the Prizes Committee held on 1st February 2005

 

1.                  Establishment of New Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

1.1             Hannah Community Prize

Hannah Community Prize, to a total value, of £180 to be awarded to students of Loughborough University in recognition of contribution towards local community life, acts of kindness or good neighbourliness.  The prize(s) may be awarded to an  individual student, specific groups of students or student households

 

The recipient(s) of the Hannah Community Prize to be selected by the T S Shipman Assessor Panel

 

1.2             Dennis Holt Travel Scholarship

 

Dennis Holt Travel Scholarship to the value of £400 to be awarded to a student of Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD).  Students should submit a  proposal stating the purpose for which the scholarship would be used and what would be achieved through the proposed travel as well as a supporting academic reference.  The prize will be awarded to a student or students who in the opinion of the Assessor Panel has made significant progress during his or her course; whose work shows a high degree of originality; and who has submitted the most meritorious proposal.

 

The recipient will be selected by the Dennis Holt Travel Scholarship Assessor Panel, consisting of:

·         2 members of academic staff from LUSAD

·         1  member of academic staff not from LUSAD

 

Membership of the panel will be for a three year period and will be approved by the Prizes Committee.

 

1.3       Department of Information Science

 

i)          Unilever Second Year Prize, to the value of £150, to be awarded to the second year student with the most improved academic performance on the BSc Information Management and Business Studies Programme.

ii)         Unilever Final Year Prize, to the value of £150 to be awarded to the final year student with the best overall academic performance in the final year of the BSc Information Management and Business Studies Programme.

 

2.                  Amendments to T S Shipman Assessor Panel

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the following amendments to the T S Shipman Assessor Panel and make a recommendation to Council.

 

from:

·            2 University Members – Approved by Senate

·            1 External Member, Deputy Chief Executive, Charnwood CVS, John Storer House – Ex Officio

to:

·            1 University Member, for a three year period  – Approved by Prizes Committe

·            1 Community Warden (also a University Member), for a three year period– Approved by Prizes Committe

·            1 External Member, Deputy Chief Executive, Charnwood CVS, John Storer House – Ex Officio

·            1 Member from the Local Community (a Charnwood Resident who is not a member of the University) for a three year period – Nominated by Community Wardens - Approved by the Prizes Committee

 

To allow the amended T S Shipman Assessor Panel to asses nominations for the Hannah Community Prize

 

3       Discontinuation of Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the discontinuation of the following prize and make a recommendation to Council.

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

  

Business School

1.1       Business School First Year Gold Prize

A Prize to the value of £150 to be awarded to the first year student with the beat academic performance on the first year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.2       Business School First Year Silver Prize

A Prize to the value of £125 to be awarded to the first year student with the second best academic performance on the first year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.3       Business School First Year Bronze Prize

A Prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the first year student with the third best academic performance on the first year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.4       Business School Second Year Gold Prize

A Prize to the value of £150 to be awarded to the second year student with the beat academic performance on the second year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.5       Business School Second Year Silver Prize

A Prize to the value of £125 to be awarded to the second year student with the second best academic performance on the second year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.6       Business School Second Year Bronze Prize

A Prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the second year student with the third best academic performance on the second year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

1.7       Business School Final Year Gold Prize

 

A Prize to the value of £150 to be awarded to the final year student with the beat academic performance on the final year of any Business School Undergraduate degree programme

 

2)                  Amendment to Existing Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the amendment to the following existing prize and make a recommendation to Council.

 

Department of Civil and Building Engineering

 

A change in title and criteria to the Robert Moss Prize, from:

 

Robert Moss Prize:  A prize to the value of £75 is awarded to a student in the Department of Civil Engineering for work carried out in the Construction Industry.

 

to:

 

Robert Moss Prize:  Four prizes, each to the value of £75, to be awarded to one student in each of the following four undergraduate programmes in  the Department of Civil and Building Engineering, for work carried out in the Construction Industry:  Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying and Architectural Engineering & Design Management 

 

3)         Discontinuation of Existing Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the discontinuation of the following prize and make a recommendation to Council.
