Senate Regulation X, Membership of Faculty Board,
requires that:
"Members of the Academic Staff elected by the
Academic Staff of the Academic Departments of the Faculty ... shall hold office for not more than three
years and shall normally retire on 31 July next following the second
anniversary of their election. They
shall not be eligible to serve for a further period as elected members of the same Board until the expiration of one
year from the end of a previous term of office in a similar capacity."
(emphasis added)
There are good reasons for ensuring a finite term
of office and a regular turnover of elected members of Boards, not least that
it provides an opportunity for early-career staff to gain experience of a
University committee. There are also
good reasons why Boards might wish to continue to benefit from the knowledge
and experience of existing members, perhaps especially those who have for some
time held positions such as learning and teaching co-ordinators or directors of
undergraduate or postgraduate studies.
Some heads of department have therefore asked if it might be possible for
some members to stand for re-election immediately following completion of their
term of office, and have argued that the requirement for regular elections
would remove any concern that Board membership would become static.
Senate is now requested to allow an amendment to Regulation
X to allow academic staff to stand for re-election without the expiration of a
year between one term of office and the next.
