Minutes of the Prizes Committee Meeting held on Tuesday 27 January 2009

09/1       Minutes

The minutes of the meeting of the Committee held on 6 November 2008 (P08-M2) were confirmed.

09/2       Matters Arising from the Minutes

09/2.1    Graduate School Poster Competition

The Chair confirmed that he would liaise with the Director of the Graduate School regarding this competition. ACTION: K Gregory

 

09/2.2    Brascote Trust Prize

The Chair would liaise with the Department of Design and Technology to clarify the decision process for this prize. ACTION: K Gregory

Post Meeting Note: The Chair has liaised with the Department and has confirmed that the decision process is appropriate.

09/3       Establishment of New Prizes

09/3.1    The Committee AGREED to the establishment of the following University prize:

PC09-P1 + TABLED PAPER

Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Internationalisation
A prize or prizes to the total value of £500 to be awarded annually to an individual or group from the student body at Loughborough University who, in the view of the assessor panel, has shown the greatest sustained contribution and dedication to developing internationalisation of the University during the five years preceding the closing date for nominations. Students whose work has been undertaken solely as part of their programme of study, however, are not eligible for this award.

The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Internationalisation has been established with the intention of encouraging and recognising exceptional service and contribution to internationalisation at Loughborough University.

 

Arrangements for the administration of the prize were noted and the nomination form approved. It was agreed that the Chair of the Prizes Committee should chair the prize assessor panel. Ms Yan Zhang agreed to prepare a web entry and advertisement for the prize. ACTION: C Yan Zhang

09/3.2    The Committee AGREED to the establishment of the following departmental prizes:

a)           Department of Information Science

               PC09-P2

               Professors’ Postgraduate Prize

A prize to the value of £150 to be awarded annually to the student with the best performance on the M.Sc. Information and Knowledge Management programme in the view of the programme board.

b)           LUSAD

               PC09-P3 + TABLED PAPER

               Edward Sharpe Prize

One or more purchase prizes to be awarded for a work or works of art or design by final year students selected from the Undergraduate Finalist Degree Show by a panel chaired by the Director of the School. The work purchased by the prize will become part of the University’s collection and be displayed around the University campus as agreed with the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

Edward Sharpe was a former principal of Loughborough College of Art and Design and set up a fund to assist the College’s students on his retirement.

c)           PIRES

               PIRES Dissertation Prize
A single prize to the value of £250 to be awarded annually to the Part C student on the Politics with a Minor Subject, International Relations or European Studies programme who obtains the highest mark from among the three final year dissertation modules EUC640, EUC641 or EUC642.

 

09/4       Amendments to Existing Prizes

09/4.1    University Prizes

a)           Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Prizes

The Committee AGREED to the following amendment to the Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Prizes (changes in bold):

Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Prizes

Up to three prizes to be awarded annually to undergraduate students with the best final-year project reports in a field of relevance to their company business, viz. any aspect of the materials, manufacturing, construction and operation of solid oxide fuel cells, including their degradation. The first prize will be worth £750, second prize £500 and third prize £250. Consolation prizes worth £50 each may also be awarded for excellent projects that do not make the top three places. The judgment will be made by Rolls Royce Fuel Cell Prizes (RRFCP) on the basis of quality and relevance.

New Criteria (change in bold)

Up to three prizes to be awarded annually to undergraduate students in Part C or Part D of their programmes with the best major individual project reports etc 

b)           BEST Awards including the Vice-Chancellor’s Sustainability Award

The Committee considered revised criteria for the BEST Awards including the   Vice-Chancellor's Sustainability Award, prizes which were administered by imago in conjunction with Loughborough Students' Union. Members were unsure of the difference between the prizes and requested that the criteria for each be laid out separately within the document. They were concerned at the low value of the prizes, and of the Vice-Chancellor's Sustainability Award and the BEST Supplier/Contractor Award in particular, and requested that these be reviewed.

 

The award coordinators may wish to investigate within the University the possibility of awarding the winner of the BEST Supplier/Contractor Award the status of 'Loughborough University Green Supplier of the Year' or similar.

 

It was agreed that the Chair would take action to consider a revised version of the criteria, together with a nomination form and promotional text. ACTION: K Gregory

 

09/4.2    Departmental Prizes

 The Committee AGREED to the following amendments to departmental prizes (changes in bold):

              Department of Information Science

PC09-P7

a)                      Dunn and Wilson Prize  - undergraduate prize
A prize to the value of £100 is awarded for the best performance in the final year of an Honours degree programme within the Department of Information Science in the view of the programme boards.

New Title:

Riley, Dunn and Wilson Undergraduate Prize

b)                      Dunn and Wilson Prize postgraduate prize

A prize to the value of £100 is awarded to an MA/MSc Information and Library Management student for the best performance on the programme in the view of the programme board.

 

New Title:

Riley, Dunn and Wilson Postgraduate Prize

c)                      Professors’ Prize – undergraduate prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the undergraduate student attaining the highest marks for a final year project.

New Criteria including New Title:

Professors’ Undergraduate Prize

A prize to the value of £150 to be awarded annually to the undergraduate student attaining the highest marks for a final year project.

09/5       Discontinuation of Prize

             The Committee approved the discontinuation of the following prize:

              AMEC Shaping the Future Award – Chemical Engineering

09/6       Nomination of Prize Assessors

The Committee NOTED the need to appoint assessors for the following prizes for 2008/09, in each case to serve for three years until 31 July 2011:

 

Dennis Holt Travelling Scholarship

John Guest Phillips Travelling Scholarship

Faculty of Science representative

09/7    Civil Engineering Prize Fund

The Committee considered a proposal by the Finance Office for the future of the Civil Engineering Prize Fund. It AGREED that the Secretary should write to the Department to propose that the Finance Office should either pay £75 each year into a named departmental budget code or it should transfer £300 per year to the Department to cover the four Robert Moss prizes which would result in the fund being run down over a number of years.

09/8    Report from Assessor Panel 2007/08

The Committee received a report from the assessor panel for the Loughborough University Graduate School Prizes and APPROVED  the following changes to the further particulars for the prizes:

a)  a recommendation by the assessors that a paragraph which referred to the Secretary carrying out additional research on students should be removed;

b)  ‘Please note that as well as academic success assessors may take the following and other factors into consideration’ to be changed to ‘Please note that, as well as academic success, assessors will take the following and other factors into consideration’.
