Senate
Subject: Terms
of Office – Heads of Departments
Origin: Patrick Cole – Director of Personnel Services
The following revision has been approved
by Council, following recommendations from Human Resources Committee, and
Remuneration Committee. Senate has already
agreed in principle to this change (minute 07/36.2 refers).
At present the
Procedures for the appointment of Heads of Departments state:
“Heads
of academic departments period of office is normally three years in the first
instance with a possible extension of up to three years. At the end of the first three year period, the
full selection procedure should be repeated. A former Head of Department shall not normally
be eligible for a further term of office beyond the six years until at least
three years have elapsed from the expiry of his/her previous term of office.”
In view of the
increased complexity and managerial nature of the role of Head of Department
the Human Resources Committee believes that the University is not best served
by the automatic bar on re-appointment after 6 years in office. It therefore recommends that the provisions
for the appointment of Heads be amended to state:
“Heads
of academic departments period of office is normally three years in the first instance
with possible extensions for periods of up to three years. At the end of the first three year period, and
any subsequent extensions, the full selection procedure should be
repeated.”
