a) The Committee ratified the action of the
Chair in recommending the establishment of the following prizes and AGREED to
make a recommendation to Senate for their establishment:

b) The Committee ratified the
action of the Chair in recommending amendments to the following prize and
AGREED to make a recommendation to Senate for its amendment:

GlaxoSmithKline Prize
(formerly the Glaxo-Wellcome Prize)
Arising from 06/17.3, the Committee noted that Clause 2 of its Terms of
Reference, including reference made to Statue XIII.6 (xvi) and Statute XIV.6
(xvi), remained relevant.
07/2.4 Departmental Prize Survey
Arising from 06/M18, the Committee noted that the Chair had written to
heads of academic departments providing them with feedback from the
Departmental prize survey and that the email had prompted action by several
departments The Committee AGREED that the Secretary should write to academic
departments over the summer to remind them of the contents of the email and to seek
further information on action taken by departments as a result this feedback.

07/3 Future Funding of
Arising from 06/19, the Committee noted that the Chair had provided the Loughborough University Development Trustees with guidance for the funding of the LUDT departmental prizes, the Loughborough University Graduate School Prize and the Loughborough University Graduate School Progression Prize from 2008 onwards.
The Committee noted that the trustees had agreed in principle to fund the existing departmental prizes in perpetuity but had reserved the right to withdraw funding for the prizes in the future, giving two years notice of doing so if funding was to be withdrawn. The Committee noted that the trustees had also agreed to fund two new departmental prizes for the Department of Computer Science (see 07/4.3 below).
Three prizes, one per faculty, each to the
value of £400 may be awarded to postgraduate research students in the second or
third year of their research student registration, for outstanding academic
performance and academic achievement.
It was AGREED to recommend the establishment of the prizes to Senate.
b) the Committee approved further details
and a nomination form for the prizes, both of which would appear on the prizes
webpages. The Committee noted that the proposed process for considering
applications could prove cumbersome. It AGREED to review the effectiveness of
the process after the first set of nominations had been considered.

Engineering Services Prize
A prize to the value of £250 to be
awarded to the Part C student on one of the Department of Chemical
Engineering’s MEng programmes with the best overall performance in Part C
of their programme in the view of the Programme Board. The prizewinner will
also be offered an expenses-paid visit to ABB.
b) AMEC
Shaping the Future Award
A prize to the value of £250 and a
work experience placement, either in the form of vacation placements or an
industrial placement, to be awarded to a Part C student on one of the
Department of Chemical Engineering’s MEng programmes who, in the view of
representatives nominated by the Department and by AMEC, has been most
successful in demonstrating skills and producing ideas that are innovative and are
likely to improve the future for the better.
It was AGREED to recommend the
establishment of the prizes to Senate.

of Computer Science

Further to 07/3 above and at the request of the Department of Computer Science,
the Committee considered the establishment of two
For Part A students
A prize to the value of
£50 to be awarded to an exceptional first-year student who the Department
judges either to have overcome
significant difficulties (academic or personal) to complete the year of study or to have made the best overall
contribution to the Department and fellow students.
The prize is funded
through the Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in
giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises
funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their
generosity has made this prize possible.
For Part B students
A prize to the value of
£75 to be awarded to an exceptional second-year student who the Department
judges either to have overcome
significant difficulties (academic or personal) to complete the year of study or to have made the best overall
contribution to the Department and fellow students.
The prize is funded

07/5.1 University Prizes
Arising from a
review of endowment fund expenditure (see 07/8 below) and, in the case of the
Hannah Community Prize, at the request of the T S Shipman Prize and Hannah
Community Prize assessors (see 07/9 below), the Committee considered changes to
the following prizes and AGREED to make recommendations to Senate as follows:
(a) Hannah Community Prize

Commemorative Awards
Existing wording:
Two annual awards to the
value of £175 each are given to assist students in the Departments of Design
and Technology, English and Drama, Geography and the

the Amenities Committee to use the residual funds to establish a trust to

Shipman Prizes
Existing wording:
Two prizes to the total
value of £300 may be awarded to students of the University or Colleges who are
considered to have contributed most to the development of co-operation and aid
between the University or Colleges and the local community.
All students are eligible for this prize ie full-time and part-time,
undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research.
This prize comes from a prize fund presented to the University by the T
S Shipman Trust, established by Mr T S Shipman, joint Managing Director of A A
Jones and Shipman,
Proposed wording (changes to first and second

(f) Ursula Lockley Travel Bursary

A bursary to the value

undertake activities to promote Anglo-German relations.
Canon Lockley was a local vicar for many years.
When his wife died he wanted to establish a bursary to commemorate her and in
particular to recognise their joint interests in Anglo-German relations.
Proposed wording (change to

A bursary or bursaries to the total value of £500 is
awarded annually to assist individual students
or groups of students to
undertake activities to promote Anglo-German relations.

At the request of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the Committee
considered changes to criteria for the G
V Sibley Memorial Prize and AGREED to make a
recommendation to Senate as follows:

Civil and Building Engineering, the Committee considered the
discontinuation of the MJT Smith Prize
and AGREED to make a recommendation to Senate.

At the request of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the Committee
considered the discontinuation of the Institute
of Leisure and Amenity Management Prize and AGREED to make a recommendation to Senate.
The
Committee noted the need for nominations for assessors for the following prizes
for 2006/2007:

It was AGREED that the Secretary would approach heads of departments in
the Faculty of Engineering to request suggestions for an individual to fill the
vacancy for an assessor from the Faculty to serve for 3 years until 31 July 2009.

Commemorative Awards:
it was AGREED that the Secretary would approach the heads of the Department of
Design and Technology, the Department of English and the Department of
Geography to request suggestions for three departmental representatives to serve
as assessors for three years until 31 July 2009.

Arising from M06/17, the
Committee received a report on expenditure of endowment fund income and
considered recommendations for action for funds which revealed an overspend or
underspend. The Committee AGREED:
a)
that
the Secretary should write to departments where there had been an overspend of
fund income to propose that named prizes be reduced in value and/or rested for
a number of years;

Secretary should write to named departments where there had been an underspend
of fund income to propose that the value of named prizes be increased;

to make
a recommendation to Senate that the criteria for the following University
prizes be changed to incorporate an increase in the value of prizes awarded and/or,
where indicated, the option of awarding more than one prize (see 07/5 for
changes to criteria):

Arising from M06/22 and in response to recommendations made by the assessor
panel for the T S Shipman Prizes and the Hannah Community Prize, the Committee approved
revised guidance for nominators for the T S Shipman and Hannah Community
Prizes, a revised nomination form for the Hannah Community Prize and a draft
nomination form for the T S Shipman prize.
The revised guidance for nominators and nomination forms for both prizes would include a statement indicating that individuals who were primarily and originally registered as students of the University may be considered for the prizes. However individuals who were primarily and originally employed by the University would normally be excluded from consideration due to the nature of the prizes.
The revised guidance and nomination forms would also include a statement indicating that those who wished to nominate students for both prizes would need to submit nomination forms for each prize.
The Committee noted that the criteria for the T S Shipman
prizes indicated that students at ‘the Colleges’ were also eligible
for consideration. The Committee was uncertain whether the
