1. Establishment of New Prizes
On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee,
Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a
recommendation to Council.
1.1
Three prizes, one per faculty, each to the value of £400 may
be awarded to postgraduate research students in the second or third year of
their research student registration, for outstanding academic performance and
academic achievement.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL
ENGINEERING
1.2 ABB Engineering Services
Prize
A prize to the value of £250 to be awarded to the Part C
student on one of the Department of Chemical Engineering’s MEng
programmes with the best overall performance in Part C of their programme in
the view of the Programme Board. The prizewinner will also be offered an expenses-paid
visit to ABB.
1.3 AMEC Shaping the Future
Award
A prize to the value of £250 and a work experience
placement, either in the form of vacation placements or an industrial
placement, to be awarded to a Part C student on one of the Department of Chemical
Engineering’s MEng programmes who, in the view of representatives
nominated by the Department and by AMEC, has been most successful in
demonstrating skills and producing ideas that are innovative and are likely to
improve the future for the better.
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
1.4 Chemical Sciences Merit
Prize
A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the student
with the highest overall mark on the Analytical stream of the MSc Chemical
Sciences programme.
DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
1.5
A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded to an exceptional
first-year student who the Department judges either to have overcome significant difficulties (academic or
personal) to complete the year of study or
to have made the best overall contribution to the Department and fellow
students.
The prize is funded through the Development Trust. The Trust
exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of
educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends
of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

A prize to the value of £75 to be awarded to an exceptional

personal) to complete the year of study or
to have made the best overall contribution to the Department and fellow
students.

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE
1.7 Special Library
Association – Europe Student Award
A prize to the
value of £100 to be awarded to the graduating student from any of the
School’s Master’s programmes who completes the best Master’s
dissertation on a topic or issue of interest to the special library community
in the view of the Programme Board.
The winner of the award will be required to provide a
summary of the findings from their dissertation for inclusion in the
fall/winter edition of the SLA Europe newsletter.
1.8 Arthur Birley Memorial
Prize
A prize to the value of £150 to be awarded annually to the
IPTME postgraduate taught student who has best demonstrated aptitude and
enthusiasm for their MSc project in the view of the Programme Board.
2. Amendments to Existing Prizes
On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee,
Senate is asked to approve the amendments (indicated in bold) to the following
existing prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

the nature of the prize. Also due to
the nature of this award, it is the usual procedure to make nominations without
the student(s) knowledge.

Four prizes,
(one in Engineering, one in Science and two in Social Sciences and Humanities)
to the value of £300 each, may be awarded annually to an outstanding student in
the Faculty for both academic and non-academic achievement, but not to the Sir
Robert Martin Prizewinner.
Proposed wording
Four prizes, (one in Engineering, one in Science
and two in Social Sciences and Humanities) to the value of £500 each, may be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the
Faculty for both academic and non-academic achievement, but not to the Sir
Robert Martin Prizewinner.

Shipman Prizes
Existing wording:
Two prizes
to the total value of £300 may be awarded to students of the University or
Colleges who are considered to have contributed most to the development of
co-operation and aid between the University or Colleges and the local
community.
All students
are eligible for this prize ie full-time and part-time, undergraduate,
postgraduate taught and research.
This prize
comes from a prize fund presented to the University by the T S Shipman Trust,
established by Mr T S Shipman, joint Managing Director of A A Jones and
Shipman,

Ursula Lockley
Travel Bursary
Existing wording:
A bursary to
the value of £250 is awarded annually to assist a student or group of students
to undertake activities to promote Anglo-German relations.
Canon
Lockley was a local vicar for many years. When his wife died he wanted to
establish a bursary to commemorate her and in particular to recognise their
joint interests in Anglo-German relations.
Proposed wording (change to first paragraph only)
A bursary or
bursaries to the total value of £500 is awarded annually to assist individual students or groups of students to undertake
activities to promote Anglo-German relations.
