Subject:        Establishment, Amendment and Discontinuation of Prizes

1.         Establishment of New Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

 

GRADUATE SCHOOL

 

1.1       Graduate School Research Student Prizes

Three prizes, one per faculty, each to the value of £400 may be awarded to postgraduate research students in the second or third year of their research student registration, for outstanding academic performance and academic achievement.

 

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

 

1.2       ABB Engineering Services Prize

A prize to the value of £250 to be awarded to the Part C student on one of the Department of Chemical Engineering’s MEng programmes with the best overall performance in Part C of their programme in the view of the Programme Board. The prizewinner will also be offered an expenses-paid visit to ABB.

 

1.3       AMEC Shaping the Future Award

A prize to the value of £250 and a work experience placement, either in the form of vacation placements or an industrial placement, to be awarded to a Part C student on one of the Department of Chemical Engineering’s MEng programmes who, in the view of representatives nominated by the Department and by AMEC, has been most successful in demonstrating skills and producing ideas that are innovative and are likely to improve the future for the better.

 

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

 

1.4       Chemical Sciences Merit Prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the student with the highest overall mark on the Analytical stream of the MSc Chemical Sciences programme.

 

DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

 

1.5       Loughborough University Development Trust Prize (Part A Prize)  

A prize to the value of £50 to be awarded to an exceptional first-year student who the Department judges either to have overcome significant difficulties (academic or personal) to complete the year of study or to have made the best overall contribution to the Department and fellow students.

 

The prize is funded through the Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

 

1.6       Loughborough University Development Trust Prize (Part B Prize)  

A prize to the value of £75 to be awarded to an exceptional second-year student who the Department judges either to have overcome significant difficulties (academic or personal) to complete the year of study or to have made the best overall contribution to the Department and fellow students.

 

The prize is funded through the Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

 

DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE

 

1.7       Special Library Association – Europe Student Award
A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the graduating student from any of the School’s Master’s programmes who completes the best Master’s dissertation on a topic or issue of interest to the special library community in the view of the Programme Board.

 

The winner of the award will be required to provide a summary of the findings from their dissertation for inclusion in the fall/winter edition of the SLA Europe newsletter.

 

INSTITUTE OF POLYMER TECHNOLOGY AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING

 

1.8       Arthur Birley Memorial Prize

 A prize to the value of £150 to be awarded annually to the IPTME postgraduate taught student who has best demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for their MSc project in the view of the Programme Board.

 

 

 

2.         Amendments to Existing Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the amendments (indicated in bold) to the following existing prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

 

UNIVERSITY PRIZES

 

2.1              Hannah Community Prize

 

Existing wording:

A prize to the total value of £180 may be awarded to students of Loughborough University in recognition of contribution towards local community life, acts of kindness or good neighbourliness. The prize(s) may be awarded to an individual student, specific groups of students or student households. 

To nominate a student, groups of students or a student household please use the Nomination Form

The Hannah Community Prize is awarded using funds originally bequeathed to the University in memory of Mr George Alexander Hannah, a student who attended Loughborough University during his retirement.

Proposed wording
A prize or prizes to the total value of £180 may be awarded to students of Loughborough University in recognition of contribution towards local community life, acts of kindness or good neighbourliness. The prize(s) may be awarded to an individual student, specific groups of students or student households. 

To nominate a student, groups of students or a student household please use the Nomination Form. If nominating a student/s for both the Hannah Community Prize and the T S Shipman Prize, please complete separate forms for each nomination.

Individuals who are primarily and originally registered as students of the University may be considered for the prizes. However individuals who are primarily and originally employed by the University will normally be excluded from consideration due to the nature of the prize. Also due to the nature of this award, it is the usual procedure to make nominations without the student(s) knowledge.

 

The Hannah Community Prize is awarded using funds originally bequeathed to the University in memory of Mr George Alexander Hannah, a student who attended Loughborough University during his retirement.

 

2.2              Loughborough College of Education Awards

 

Existing wording:

Two annual awards to the value of £175 each are given to assist students in the Departments of Design and Technology, English and Drama, Geography and the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, to enable them to participate in extra-curricular educational activities.

The Amenities Fund of the former Loughborough College of Education was established for the benefit of students of that College. When the College amalgamated with the University it was resolved by the Amenities Committee to use the residual funds to establish a trust to commemorate the College by awarding annual prizes open to each of the Departments of the University which had previously been in the College of Education.

Proposed wording (change to first paragraph only):
An annual award or awards to the total value of £700 are given to assist students in the Departments of Design and Technology, English and Drama, Geography and the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, to enable them to participate in extra-curricular educational activities. 

2.3              Sir Robert Martin University Prize

Existing wording:

A prize to the value of £400 plus a commemorative medal may be awarded annually to a student of outstanding all round achievement in the University, including academic achievement.

Proposed wording
A prize to the value of £1,000 plus a commemorative medal may be awarded annually to a student of outstanding all round achievement in the University, including academic achievement.

2.4              Sir Robert Martin Faculty Prizes

 

Existing wording:

Four prizes, (one in Engineering, one in Science and two in Social Sciences and Humanities) to the value of £300 each, may be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the Faculty for both academic and non-academic achievement, but not to the Sir Robert Martin Prizewinner.

 

Proposed wording
Four prizes, (one in Engineering, one in Science and two in Social Sciences and Humanities) to the value of £500 each, may be awarded annually to an outstanding student in the Faculty for both academic and non-academic achievement, but not to the Sir Robert Martin Prizewinner.

 

2.5              T S Shipman Prizes

 

Existing wording:

Two prizes to the total value of £300 may be awarded to students of the University or Colleges who are considered to have contributed most to the development of co-operation and aid between the University or Colleges and the local community.

All students are eligible for this prize ie full-time and part-time, undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research.

This prize comes from a prize fund presented to the University by the T S Shipman Trust, established by Mr T S Shipman, joint Managing Director of A A Jones and Shipman, Leicester. A A Jones and Shipman were one of the largest machine tool manufacturers in Britain in the 1960s.

Proposed wording (changes to first and second paragraphs only):
A prize or
prizes to the total value of £600 may be awarded to students of the University or Colleges who are considered to have contributed most to the development of co-operation and aid between the University or Colleges and the local community.

2.6              Ursula Lockley Travel Bursary

Existing wording:

A bursary to the value of £250 is awarded annually to assist a student or group of students to undertake activities to promote Anglo-German relations.

Canon Lockley was a local vicar for many years. When his wife died he wanted to establish a bursary to commemorate her and in particular to recognise their joint interests in Anglo-German relations.

 

Proposed wording (change to first paragraph only)
A bursary or bursaries to the total value of £500 is awarded annually to assist individual students or groups of students to undertake activities to promote Anglo-German relations.

 

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY

 

2.7              Glaxo-Wellcome Prize

Existing wording:
A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the best MSc student on the Analytical and Pharmaceutical Science programme whose studies include pharmaceutical modules.

Proposed Wording  (changes in bold including new title)

GlaxoSmithKline Prize
A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually to the MSc student with the highest overall mark amongst those students on the Chemical Sciences programme whose studies include pharmaceutical modules.

 

SCHOOL OF SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCES

2.8              G V Sibley Memorial Prize

 

Existing wording:
A plaque and a framed photograph to be awarded in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

 

Proposed wording
A plaque and a framed photograph to be awarded to the best undergraduate student on the BSc Sport and Exercise Science programme as judged by the Programme Board.

 

 

3.         Discontinuation of Existing Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the discontinuation of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council:

School of Sport and Exercise Sciences
