The Minutes of the sixty second meeting of the Committee
held on 01 February 2005
(P05-M1) were confirmed.
It was noted that Senate and Council had APPROVED:

d) The
Committee ratified the action of the
Chair and AGREED to recommend the establishment of the following prizes to Senate
i) Department of Computer Science
Professor Ondrej Sykora Remembrance Prize the value of £1000, and a trophy, may be awarded to the best paper accepted for publication by a PhD student during their first or second year. Eligible students are those who complete their second year prior to 11th May of the award year. A committee from the department will select the successful paper. An award will not be made if no acceptable papers are submitted for the award.
ii) Department of Information Science
Final Year Departmental Prize to the value of £100 may be awarded to the undergraduate student with the best performance in the final year of the Publishing with English programme.
iii)
Department
of Social Sciences
The British Psychological Society Prize consisting of a certificate
presented by the British Psychology Society, a free one-year graduate
membership of the society, a copy of the book which was the most recent winner
of the British Psychological Society Book Award and a commemorative bookplate, to be awarded
annually to the undergraduate student, on the BSc Psychology programme,
graduating with the highest overall grade.
e) The
Committee ratified the action of the
Chair and AGREED to recommend the amendment
of the following existing prizes to Senate

It was
reported that the Hannah Community Prize was presented by the Vice-chancellor
to the successful students at a well attended ceremony which attracted positive
press coverage in the Leicester Mercury, Loughborough Echo and News@lboro. This publicity should ensure a higher number
of nominations being submitted.
It was
reported that a signature of the current Vice-chancellor had not been added to
the Prize Certificates that had recently been printed, however the Secretary
would investigate the feasibility of adding the signature of the next
Vice-chancellor to the printed certificates. ACTION SECRETARY
The
committee noted the membership and terms of reference of the Committee for the
2005/2006 session and considered if they still remained fit for purpose. A suggestion was raised that the terms of
reference should reflect the work of the committee in publicising and promoting
University Prizes. Following discussion
it was AGREED that the following be added to the terms of reference:
To publicise, promote and raise the awareness of prizes and to encourage
the submission of prize nominations and applications

a) The Committee considered the establishment of the Loughborough University Postgraduate Research Student Prize, and made the suggestion that the criteria for the prize be amended to:
Three Prizes, one per Faculty, each to the
value of £400 may be awarded to a postgraduate research student, in the second
or third year of their research student registration, for outstanding academic
performance and achievement
The Secretary AGREED to discuss this suggestions with the Research Team.
b) The committee considered the use of the Nomination Form in the assessment of the Loughborough University Postgraduate Research Student Prize and suggested that the section on any other relevant information be removed. The Secretary AGREED to discuss this suggestion with the Research Team
c) The
Committee was informed that the Research Team had intended to request funding
for the prize from the University via Operations Sub-Committee. It was noted that the Loughborough University
Postgraduate Prizes are funded with support from the Development and that this
may be a suitable funding option for the Postgraduate Research Prizes Trust. The Secretary AGREED to discuss the funding
options with the Research Team
The
Committee considered nominations of assessors for the following prizes for
2004/2005:
a. Ede & Revenscroft Prize and John Guest
Philips Memorial Travelling Scholarship
It was AGREED that the Secretary would approach the Heads of the Department
in the Faculty of Science and request suggestions for an individual to fill the
vacancy for an assessor from the Faculty of Science to serve for 3 years until
31 July 2008.
b. Sir Robert Martin Faculty of Social Sciences
and Humanities Prize
It was AGREED that the Secretary would approach the Heads of the Department in
the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and request suggestions for an
individual to fill the vacancy for an assessor from the Faculty of Social
Sciences and Humanities to serve for 3 years until 31 July 2008.
c. Sir Robert Martin Faculty of Science Prize
It was AGREED that the Secretary would approach the Heads of the Department in
the Faculty of Science and request suggestions for an individual to fill the
vacancy for an assessor from the Faculty of Science to serve for 3 years until
31 July 2008.
The Committee consider suggestions for filling the vacant Prizes Committee post of Faculty of Engineering representative and the Secretary AGREED to discuss the vacant post with the Faculty of Engineering.
a) The Committee received and considered comments from the Department of Economics on the criteria used in awarding the Loughborough University Postgraduate Prize and Loughborough University Postgraduate Progression Prize.
b) The Committee received and considered a report from the Assessors of the Loughborough University Postgraduate Prize and Loughborough University Postgraduate Progression Prize and considered a recommendation that potential nominators be provided with further guidance on the assessment process as well as how a nomination should be best submitted.
c) The Committee considered a recommendation from the assessors that appropriate weighting may be given to nominations for postgraduate students from non English speaking countries to reflect the extra effort required by them in their academic and non-academic achievements
d) Following discussion of the above comments and recommendations the Committee AGREED that further guidance on the criteria, nomination and assessment process of these prizes should be provided. The Secretary AGREED to circulate appropriate wording to Committee members for their approval. ACTION SECRETARY.
e) Subsequent to another suggestion it was AGREED to recommend the following amendment to the Loughborough University Postgraduate Prize and the Loughborough University Postgraduate Progression Prize to Senate:
i)
From: A prize to the value of £400 may be awarded
annually to a student registered on an MSc or MA programme and of outstanding
all round achievement in the University, including academic achievement.
To A prize to the value of £400 may be
awarded annually to a student, registered on an MSc or MA programme, for
outstanding all round achievement
ii) Loughborough University Postgraduate
Progression Prize
To: A
prize to the value of £400 may be awarded annually to a student registered on
an MSc or MA programme who has been accepted for registration as a Loughborough
University PhD student, for outstanding all round achievement. The award will be payable upon registration

The Committee noted that the Department of Civil and Building Engineering had not awarded their LUDT prize and were informed that they are reviewing the criteria in order to ensure the prize is awarded in 2005/06.
The Committee were
informed that there was no central funding for the University Travelling
Exhibition Prizes and after discussion it was AGREED to recommend the
discontinuation of the University
Travelling Exhibition Prizes to Senate.
Pending approval by Senate and Council the Secretary would inform
relevant departments that the University Travelling Exhibition Prizes had been
discontinued, giving them the option of funding their own Travelling Exhibition
Prize. ACTION SECRETARY.
The Committee received and considered a report from the
Assessors of the Ede and Ravenscroft and John Guest Philips Memorial Travelling
Scholarship and AGREED that assessors be
given the option of awarding one John
Guest Philips Memorial Travelling Scholarship of £1,000, as opposed to two at £500. ACTION
SECRETARY
The Committee also
AGREED with a suggestion that assessors be informed that the assessment process
for the John Guest Phillips Memorial
Travelling Scholarship should not only take the social context, and related
social benefits of proposed projects, into account, as this may be
disadvantageous to some applicants, but that that all factors, such as
scientific benefit or increased academic knowledge be considered. ACTION
SECRETARY
The Committee considered a recommendation that all departments be required to submit a nomination for the Sir Robert Martin University Prize. After discussion it was AGREED that requiring departments to submit a nomination would not be beneficial to the prize and it’s standing within the University. Other suggestions on how to increase the number of departmental nominations were made and the Secretary AGREED to implement the following:
i) To contact Heads of Departments encouraging them to discuss the Sir Robert Martin University Prize and possible nominations at staff meetings
ii) To provide academic staff with further guidance on nominating students for the Sir Robert Martin University Prize
iii) To encourage Staff-Student Committees to discuss the Sir Robert Martin University Prize
iv) To raise awareness of the Sir Robert Martin University Prize among students encouraging them to speak to their department if they deem themselves to be suitable candidates. Awareness of the prize may be achieved through promotion in the Student Union Magazine (Label), the Student Union Radio and the Student Union website
