of New Prizes
On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee,
Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a
recommendation to Council.
The David
Goodson Prize for the Best Project with an Environmental Theme to the
value of £150 to be awarded to the final year student with the best final year
solo project with an environmental
theme. The award will be decided by a
departmental committee, appointed by the Head of Department and chaired by the
Professor of Underwater Acoustics, who will assess the projects on academic
achievement as well as contribution to environmental awareness.
The prize is in memory of David Goodson, who was a member of
staff in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering for 26 years
until his untimely death in January 2004.
David was a Chief Experimental Officer in the Underwater Acoustics
Research Group and established himself by becoming a genuine world authority on
bioacoustics. He crossed the divide
between engineering and biology with such success that he was regularly invited
to present his research at prestigious institutions around the world. He also published many academic papers and
participated in high-profile European Commission projects.
The Martin Jones Prize to the
value of £75 to be awarded to the graduating student with the highest overall
mark on the BEng Mechanical Engineering programme.
Martin Jones was a student of Mechanical Engineering,
graduating in 2003. He died in October
2003. This prize was established by
members of his family in recognition of Martin and his love of the time he
spent at Loughborough.
