1.         Establishment of New Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

 

1.1       Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

The David Goodson Prize for the Best Project with an Environmental Theme to the value of £150 to be awarded to the final year student with the best final year solo project  with an environmental theme.  The award will be decided by a departmental committee, appointed by the Head of Department and chaired by the Professor of Underwater Acoustics, who will assess the projects on academic achievement as well as contribution to environmental awareness.

 

The prize is in memory of David Goodson, who was a member of staff in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering for 26 years until his untimely death in January 2004.  David was a Chief Experimental Officer in the Underwater Acoustics Research Group and established himself by becoming a genuine world authority on bioacoustics.  He crossed the divide between engineering and biology with such success that he was regularly invited to present his research at prestigious institutions around the world.  He also published many academic papers and participated in high-profile European Commission projects.

 

1.2       Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

The Martin Jones Prize to the value of £75 to be awarded to the graduating student with the highest overall mark on the BEng Mechanical Engineering programme.

 

Martin Jones was a student of Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2003.  He died in October 2003.  This prize was established by members of his family in recognition of Martin and his love of the time he spent at Loughborough.

1          Establishment of New Prizes

 

On the recommendation of the Chair of the Prizes Committee, Senate is asked to approve the establishment of the following prizes and make a recommendation to Council.

 

1.1              Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering

 

i)          The W.O. Bentley Prize for Excellence in Automotive Engineering (MEng) to the value of £100 to be awarded to the final year student with the best Part D exam results on the MEng Automotive Engineering programme.

 

ii)         The W.O. Bentley Prize for Excellence in Automotive Engineering (BEng) to the value of £100 to be awarded to the final year student with the best Part C exam results on the BEng Automotive Engineering programme.

 

1.2              Department of Civil and Building Engineering

 

Severn Trent Directors Prize to the value of £250 to be awarded to the final year student with the best assessed environmental research project on a Civil and Building Engineering BEng or MEng programme.

 

1.3              Department of Economics

 

i)          MSc Semester 1 Prizes, six prizes varying in value from £250 to £500, to be awarded to the students with the best overall performance in Semester 1 of a MSc programme in the Department of Economics.  In order to be eligible for the prize the student(s) must obtain an average of at least 65% across all four modules and at least two module marks of 70% or more.  If no student reaches this standard the best six will be selected by the Department of Economics Prizes Committee, which will take the difficulty of modules into account.  The value of the prize will depend upon the marks achieved.  The minimum value of a prize is £250, students scoring an average module mark of 70% with at least three module marks of 70% or greater will be awarded a prize of £500.

 

ii)                  MSc Semester 2 Prizes, six prizes, varying in value from £250 to £500, to be awarded to the students with the best overall performance in Semester 2 of an MSc programme in the Department of Economics.  In order to be eligible for the prize the student(s) must obtain an average of at least 65% across all four modules and at least two module marks of 70% or more.  If no student reaches this standard the best six will be selected by the Department of Economics Prizes Committee, which will take the difficulty of modules into account.  The value of the prize will depend upon the marks achieved.  The minimum value of a prize is £250, students scoring an average module mark of 70% with at least three module marks of 70% or greater will be awarded a prize of £500.

 

1.4              Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering

 

Cambridge Consultants Prize for Hardware Design to the value of £500 to be awarded to be awarded to the final year student, on a BEng or MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering programme, judged to have delivered the best solo project on the theme of hardware design.  Recommendations made by project supervisors and project assessors will be considered for the award of the prize by a small committee of staff from both Cambridge Consultants Ltd and the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

 

1.5             Loughborough University Mature Students Prize (2003/04)

 

Nine prizes, one per year in each Faculty to the value of £400 for a first year student, £300 for a second year student and £300 for a final year student, to be awarded to the mature student (students who were aged 21 or over on 1st October in the year of their entry) with the best academic performance in their appropriate year.

 

This prize is to be awarded for one year (2003/04) only.
