Subject: Report of the Prizes Committee Meeting held on 27th October 1999

The Prizes Committee met on 27th October 1999 and agreed to make the following recommendations to Senate.

1. The Churchill Prize

At the request of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, the establishment of a prize to the value of £300 to be awarded annually to the student team producing the best Aircraft Design Project (in module TTC008).

2. John S Webber Memorial Prize

At the request of the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, that the John S Webber Prize be increased to an annual sum of £60 to be awarded to the student, or group of students, making the most valuable contribution to the Part C Vehicle Design Module (TTC006).

3. The Motor Industry Prize

At the request of the Business School, the establishment of a prize to the value of £100, to be awarded annually by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and the Retail Motor Industry Federation, to the student with the best overall performance in each year of the Retail Management (Automotive) degree programme.

4. 3M UK Project Prize

At the request of the Business School, altering the conditions of the 3M UK Project prize so that students could apply for it on return from the Industrial and Professional Studies Year. Students wishing to be considered for the award of £200 would have to submit a short statement (no more than 750 words) to demonstrate their development in a management context, based on the following criteria: Personal Development, Key Skills Development and Overview.

5. Chemistry Prizes

At the request of the Department of Chemistry, to combine the Chemistry and Chemistry with Polymer Prizes in order to establish a prize to the value of £150 to be awarded to the student with the best performance on each of the programmes run by the Department of Chemistry.

6. Cascelloid Prize

At the request of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, that the Cascelloid Prize be renamed as the Professor Roy Sury Memorial Prize in memory of Professor Roy Sury who was Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering 1972-1986 and who sadly died in January 1999.

7. J N Butters Memorial Prize

At the request of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, that the conditions and value of the JN Butters Memorial Prize be altered to a prize to the value of £80 be awarded to each member of the student group that makes the best presentation of a group in the first year of the Mechanical Engineering programme. The maximum combined value of the prize will not exceed £320.

8. Sue Glyptis Award

At the request of the Department of Physical Education, Sports Science and Recreation Management, the establishment of a prize to the value of £100, to be awarded annually to the best research profile in MSc Recreation Management.

9. G V Sibley Memorial Prize

At the request of the Department of Physical Education, Sports Science and Recreation Management, that the value of the GV Sibley Memorial Prize be increased from an annual sum of £30 to an annual sum of £100.

The establishment/altered conditions of these prizes will require the approval of Council.

10. Royal Society SG Brown Ltd Prize

Due to the difficulty in meeting the conditions of the prize, that the Royal Society SG Brown Ltd Prize be withdrawn from the list of University Prizes.

The removal of this prize will require the approval of Council.
