The Prizes Committee met on 5th March 1999 and agreed to make the following recommendations to Senate.

1. New Prize Proposals

It was AGREED to RECOMMEND the following prizes to Senate.

  1. The Geoffrey Wilde Prize to the value of £200 to be awarded by the Department of AAETS to the student producing the best Gas Turbine Design Project.
  2. The Morgan Matroc Prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually for the student receiving the best mark for a ceramics project on the undergraduate programme Materials Engineering/ Materials with Business Studies in the Department of IPTME
  3. Prebon Yamani Prize to the value of £150 to be awarded by the Department of Computer Science for the best final year project in the academic years 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
  4. Prebon Yamani Team Project Prize to the value of £100 (per team member) to be awarded by the Department of Computer Science for the best second year Information Technology Project in the academic years 1998-99 and 1999-2000.
  5. Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. Prizes .
    Prizes to the value of £1000 to be awarded to exceptional full-time or part-time students who have submitted a successful thesis within three years or £500 to be awarded to exceptional full-time or part-time students who have submitted a successful thesis within four years.
  6. Astra Charnwood Prize to the value of £200 to be awarded annually for the best Organic Chemistry performance by a finalist in the Department of Chemistry.
  7. Lancaster Synthesis Prize to the value of £100 to be awarded for the best Organic/Biomed project in the Department of Chemistry
  8. Glaxo-Wellcome Prize to the value of £100 to be awarded annually for the best MSc student on the Medicinal Chemistry/Drug Metabolism programme in the Department of Chemistry.
  9. East Midland Geotechnical Group Prize (Final year) to the value of £75 to be awarded annually to the best final year research project in the subject of Geotechnics in the Department of Civil and Building Engineering.
  10. East Midland Geotechnical Group Prize (Second year) to the value of £25 to be awarded annually to the student achieve the best second year marks in the subject of Geotechnics in the Department of Civil and Building Engineering.

The establishment of these prizes will require the approval of Council.

2. Prizes Details

  1. It was noted that the BTech in Mechanical Engineering for which the Basil FW Powell Memorial Prize was awarded no longer ran. It was AGREED to RECOMMEND to Senate that the terms of the award be amended and that the prize be awarded to a student on the BEng Sandwich programme.
  2. This change will require the approval of Council.

  3. It was reported that, at present, students do not receive a letter of congratulation with their award. It was AGREED to RECOMMEND to Senate that the Secretary design a certificate or official letter to accompany cheques.

3. Nomination of Prize Assessors

  1. Sir Robert Martin Prize
    It was AGREED to RECOMMEND to Senate that the following be appointed assessors for the Sir Robert Martin Prize.

  3. T S Shipman Prize
    It was AGREED to RECOMMEND to Senate that the following be appointed assessors for the TS Shipman Prize.

    It was AGREED to RECOMMEND to Senate that the following be appointed assessors for the John Guest Phillips Memorial Travelling Scholarship and Ede and Ravenscroft Prize.
