Title:              Revision of Regulation XIV: Student Appeals against Programme Board or Module Board Decisions

Origin:           Jennifer Nutkins, Academic Registrar

Date:              18 May 2005

In the light of difficulties encountered in the conduct of an academic appeal case in late 2004, a number of amendments are proposed to Regulation XIV to make the procedures for conduct of the Academic Appeal Committee more explicit.

These are as follows:

  1. Specify that the paperwork for the Committee will be as considered by the Dean under paragraph 6 but with one additional iteration with the Department and student if the parties so wish. This excludes the seeking of a whole new set of paperwork (new para 8).
  2. Provide for participation in meetings by members of staff who are not the chair of the board concerned. Although this has taken place at a number of Appeals Committee meetings and has been essential to ensure a fair hearing there is currently no provision for such presence in the Regulation (paragraph 14).
  3. Set out a more detailed procedure for the conduct of meetings of the Committee. This procedure essentially parallels that set out in Ordinance XVII for meetings of the Student Disciplinary Panel (delete old paragraph 12 and introduce new paragraph 15).
  4. Make minor amendments to the ordering of other paragraphs in the light of the above amendments.

In addition, it is proposed that the title of the Regulation and all paragraph references to “Module Boards” be amended to read “Review Boards” in light of the proposed changes in terminology in the regulations for academic awards (subject to approval of those changes).

Ordinances and Regulations Committee and Learning and Teaching Committee are asked to approve these proposals for recommendation to Senate.
