Learning and Teaching Committee

Subject:  Constitution and Membership of the Committee 2009/10

There follows below a note of discussion that took place at the meeting of Programme Quality Team in July 2009 concerning the membership of this Committee.  The constitution and membership of the Committee are set out overleaf.  No change has been made to the constitution itself, though the accompanying paragraphs concerning the attendance of others at its meetings have been adjusted in the light of the PQ Team discussion; and the membership has been updated for 2009/10.

The approval of the Committee is sought

(1)   for the invitation issued to LSU, for 2009/10 on a trial basis, to nominate three students, one from each Faculty, to attend LTC meetings as observers;

(2)   for the arrangements proposed for non-members to attend to contribute to its discussions;

(3)   for the decision to leave vacant for the time being the place on the Committee for ‘a Director of a Support Service contributing to learning and teaching’.

PQ Team 6 July 2009 - Membership of Learning and Teaching Committee

(1)  Considered a proposal from Danny McNeice (VP(Education) LSU) that the membership of LTC be amended to include one student from each Faculty.  It was envisaged these students would be elected from outgoing departmental committee chairs within their Faculty.  It was suggested the student viewpoint in learning and teaching matters was more appropriately represented at the Faculty rather than the institutional level because of different practices across disciplines, and information could be passed back to the departmental committee chairs more effectively if there was more than one student in a position to do this.

It was agreed to recommend to LTC that in the first instance, for 2009/10 on a one-year trial basis, the Students’ Union Executive be invited to appoint one student from each Faculty from amongst the outgoing departmental student committee chairs in the Faculty to attend meetings of LTC as an observer.

(2)  It was noted that it would not be appropriate for Anne Mumford to continue to serve on LTC as ‘Director of a Support Service contributing to Learning and Teaching’.  The PVC(T) had agreed however that for the time being there would be a standing agenda item on the development of learning spaces and Anne would be invited to contribute under the item and attend for it as appropriate.

(3)  Any implications of Senate’s decisions on the future of the Graduate School for John Harper’s membership of LTC would need further discussion.
