Learning Space Developments

This summer the following developments are taking place:

  • Development of D003 which is where ELSU were located in the “D wing” of the James France Building. This will be a space which may be booked as a whole or in three “zones”. It could be used for formal sessions but is being designed primarily for student use. The location means it will only be available from 0900-1800. The zones are:
    • Individual working zone with PCs and spaces for individual use.
    • Group study area with students able to gather round a table.
    • Comfy zone with easy chairs for more relaxed discussion.

The design has been developed in conjunction with Sophie Driscoll, VP Education and the detailed specification emerged from a meeting to look at spaces to support the student experience reported to the last Learning and Teaching Committee.

  • Opening of the Health Exercise and Biosciences Building and four lecture rooms within the building (one tiered for 100 plus 3 flat-floor rooms) and some casual seating areas suitable for student groupwork.

  • Investigation of options for the development of the James France Building in 2009 to include:
    • Refurbishment of CC011, CC012, CC013, CC014.
    • Combining of rooms CC109 and CC110 to create a larger room to meet the requirement for larger flat floor rooms.
    • Removing the wall in the area above the café to create a first floor balconied area with informal furniture to create a student learning area with a teaching room off this area created by knocking together rooms CC111 and CC113.
    • This project may be further enhanced by the creation of teaching facilities in the area of the current Muslim Prayer Room should the project to develop a Faith Centre be sufficiently progressed at the time the other work is undertaken (this could be a second phase).

This is a very exciting project which will make a further significant enhancement to both formal and informal learning spaces.
