PURPOSE
The University Teaching Centre is being established primarily as a resource for academic colleagues in their teaching role. The Centre will seek to meet the professional development needs of staff, and to support colleagues in meeting the challenges arising from strategic priorities, department-based initiatives and developments in learning and teaching practice. The Centre will also be a professional development resource for other staff whose role encompasses learning and teaching responsibilities. The work of the Centre is intended to contribute to sustaining and enhancing the University’s reputation for high quality learning and teaching provision.

AIMS

The aims of the Centre are to:

 

a)      Increase the profile of, and recognition for, teaching-related activities at Loughborough, in accordance with the University Strategy

b)      Provide a responsive service that meets the needs of individuals, groups and departments, and satisfies the University’s probationary requirements,  in relation to learning and teaching  

c)      Promote and engage in enhancement initiatives in response to areas of identified need and in pursuit of innovative approaches to learning and teaching

d)      Foster a collaborative approach to the development of practice, interfacing as appropriate with internal groups/centres and external organisations

SCOPE

The Centre’s responsibilities in relation to each of its aims are as follows:

 

Promoting strategy and policy 

 

a)      Support the implementation of University strategic aims and objectives related to learning and teaching

b)      Advise on and contribute to the development of University policy linked to learning and teaching through leadership/membership of committees, groups and working parties

c)      Support the University’s Recognition and Reward arrangements for teaching by effective management of Mini-Projects and Academic Practice Awards, and lead/contribute to future developments in this area

d)      Contribute to the implementation and management of the University’s procedures for promotion, and advise on future developments related to the teaching element of promotions

 

Supporting staff and departments

 

e)      Manage the University’s HEA-accredited provision (presently the New Lecturers’ and Associate Teaching Routes) in support of newly appointed academic staff subject to probation and other staff who make a significant contribution to teaching and the support of student learning  

f)        Develop and deliver a range of relevant continuing professional development provision in relation to pedagogical practice, including:

·         practice-oriented workshops, seminars and symposia

·         specialist advice/support for staff in addressing specific issues

·         consultancy work with departments

·         information resources, including online provision

 

g)      Advise on and support departmental project-based work

h)      Establish networks amongst colleagues, within and between departments, designed to promote the development and exchange of knowledge and inform future practice and provision

i)        Provide advice to colleagues in relation to curriculum design and development activities, including those related to flexible and blended learning

j)        Identify external initiatives and opportunities linked to teaching awards and  funding for pedagogical research, and support departments/individuals in applying for awards and submitting bids

Enhancing quality 

 

k)      Initiate and lead University-wide development projects in support of the University’s Learning and Teaching Implementation Plan, and produce outputs including practice guides, supporting resources and internal reports

l)        Lead enhancement initiatives in response to Annual and Periodic Programme Reviews, External Examiners’ Reports, Student Feedback (including NSS) and emerging national developments

m)   Identify, disseminate and support the embedding of effective practice emerging from in-house initiatives

n)      Manage and further develop the University Teaching Observation Scheme

o)      Participate in Annual and Periodic Programme Reviews

 

Working collaboratively

 

p)      Develop further the strong working relationships with Learning Policy Support in the Academic Registry, the ADTs and LTCs, and Personnel Services, to ensure an effective interface between the University’s Quality Assurance and Enhancement activities   

q)      Work with colleagues involved in e-learning, including the OLDOs, on the use and applications of new technologies to support pedagogical practice

r)       Develop effective working partnerships with the Loughborough-based CETLs

 

s)      Engage in collaborative work with relevant internal groups including Research Office, Enterprise Office, Loughborough Students’ Union, Student Hub Steering Group and other support services as appropriate 

t)        Strengthen existing links to relevant external bodies/networks (eg Higher Education Academy, Staff and Educational Development Association, Heads of Educational Development Group, Quality Assurance Agency)
