Change in arrangements approved by PVC(T)
It was noted at the previous
meeting that the PVC(T) had taken Chair’s action on behalf of the
Committee to approve a revised list of calculators for use in University
examinations and guidelines for students with dyslexia or dyspraxia on choosing
a calculator.
A number of problems arose
with the introduction of the ‘approved list’ and there were several
complaints from students who were unhappy about having to change their
calculator in mid-programme for one on the approved list.
In response to the concerns
raised by academic departments and individual students, the PVC(T) subsequently
took Chair’s action to agree that, for the purposes of Regulation VII,
the ‘approved list’ for 2005/06 should be deemed to include any
non-programmable calculator and that the currently published list come into
effect in 2006/07.
Change endorsed by PDQ Team
This action was reported to
the PDQ Team at its meeting in December 2005.
PDQ
considered the possibility of phasing in the approved list, to apply only to
students joining the University from 2006/07.
It was pointed out however that this would lead to practical
difficulties in administering examination halls where different year groups
were accommodated next to each other.
Consideration was also given to the University holding a stock of
calculators for examination use. It was
recognised however that this would not be a straightforward matter as every
machine would have to be checked to ensure it was in working order each time it
was used, and students who were not familiar with the model provided might be
disadvantaged. There had been particular
concerns all along for dyslexic students who were likely to need time to get
used to a new machine. It was therefore
agreed to endorse the approach now adopted.
