4. Minutes
To confirm and sign, subject to
any correction, the Minutes of the Twenty-Seventh Meeting of the Committee held
on 3 June 2004.
5. Matters Arising from the Minutes not
otherwise appearing on the Agenda
*5.1 M.04/27 Learning and Teaching Strategy
To note that the revised summary
version of the Learning and Teaching Strategy was approved by Senate for
publication on the TQI web-site.
*5.2 M.04/28 Committee to Review the Structure of the
Academic Year
To note that the recommendations as presented in the report of the RSAY
Committee were approved by Senate; and that the PDQ Team has subsequently set
up a working group to follow up the recommendations concerning the review and
refinement of programmes by departments.
*5.3 M.04/29 Use of 15-credit modules in undergraduate
programmes
To note that the Committee’s recommendations were approved by Senate,
allowing the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering to operate programmes
with 15-credit modules in 2004/05; Senate has requested a report on the ‘pilot
study’ as a substantive item at its meeting in June 2005.

Use of calculators in examinations
Further to discussion at the previous
meeting, to endorse amendments to Regulation VII, Conduct of Examinations and
other Assessments, and recommend to Senate a list of approved calculators.
*5.6 M.04/35.2 Validation of Foundation Degree in Exercise
& Health at Loughborough College
To note that the Committee’s recommendations were approved by Senate;
there has been no intake, however, in the current session.

Teaching Quality Enhancement: additional funding
To note that extended action plans for use of TQEF in 2005/06 were
submitted to HEFCE in July 2004, together with action plans for the use of
‘Supporting Professional Standards’ funding in 2004/05 and 2005/06. HEFCE have agreed that the proposed
activities should be eligible for funding but have asked for revised action
plans by 1 December 2004 with more easily measurable targets.

Review
To consider the report of the
Review Panel on programmes in the Department of Politics, International
Relations and European Studies (PIRES) and the response of the Department.

To consider the report of the Panel on the revalidation of the MSc in Aerosystems Engineering at the RAF College, Cranwell.
8. Foundation Degrees: Policy Statement
To consider, on the recommendation of the PDQ Team, a draft University policy statement on Foundation Degrees.

*13. Curriculum Sub-Committee –
14 October 2004 (A)
To recommend new programme proposals and other strategic changes to Senate on the advice of Curriculum Sub-Committee.
*14. Diploma in International Studies
On the recommendation of the PDQ Team, to recommend to Senate that approval in principle be given to a Diploma route in International Studies combining study (in a educational institution) and work experience (in an industrial placement abroad).
*15. Handbook for Validated Provision
To approve the issue of a ‘Handbook for Validated Provision’ to partner institutions, and minor amendments to the University’s validation procedure, as incorporated in the Handbook.

Note: The CPS is expected to provide ‘a general
update of the University’s progress…against its corporate plan and strategic
priorities’. The AMS is a report
‘specifically on the use of HEFCE strategic special funding and the
institution’s race equality work’ (HEFCE 2004/20).
*20. Higher Education Academy
(HEA) Accreditation
To note that in July 2004 an HEA
Accreditation Team visited the University to review our pathway to what used to
be ILTHE Membership. The Team has
recommended that the New Lecturers' Programme be accredited as a pathway until
2009 and that a new Associateship pathway be similarly approved subject to HEA
scrutiny of the new documentation.
*21. Phase 5 of the Fund for the Development of
Teaching and Learning (FDTL5)
To note that funding has been awarded to a project entitled ‘Embedding employability skills in the curriculum’ (EPIC) led by Derek Stephens (Information Science). Funding amounts to £149,933 over three years.
*22. QAA Special Review of Foundation Degrees 2004/05
To note that the following
programmes delivered by Loughborough College and leading to Foundation Degrees
awarded by the University have been selected by QAA to be included in a sample
of FDs to be reviewed during 2004/05:
