The Minutes of the Twenty Seventh Meeting of the Committee held on

14th January 2004 were confirmed and signed by the Chair.

4.       Matters arising from the Minutes not appearing elsewhere on the Agenda

§       There may be a trial of the voting systems in for students in the future.

§       The need for a connection of Loughborough with Leicester via videoconference for teaching is still uncertain.

§       There is still a problem with losing large rooms during teaching in the EHB.  The Deputy VC has agreed the Careers Fair is to go ahead in the EHB. Lecturers need to be informed.

§       Production of 35mm slide projectors has finished in some companies.

5.       Report by the Director of Media Services

The Director’s report is appended.

In response to the Director’s report the following items were discussed.

The next two years of HEFCE money has been used for the James France building work.  The next bid will be in 2006.

Access to James France after hours is likely to be with swipe cards for post graduates only

It was enquired if the RT lecture rooms would be refurbished at the same time as the rest of the building in 2005.  This is a possibility depending on funding

6.       Feedback from the Departments

X401 has very small desks and is very unpopular with students – Will it be considered for removal from the pool?  It was suggested that the seating could be different, for example, rows and tiered, or change the function of this room.

Research showed that prospective students didn’t choose to study Computer Science at Loughborough University due to the Haslegrave Building, which is dated.  Buildings and rooms are an important factor.

7.       Any other Business

The Chair gave thanks to Anne and her team for their support.

8.       Date of next meeting

The date for the next meeting to be arranged for January 2005

Report of the Director of Media Services

Budget for 2004/5

We have been allocated a fair budget in the context of the overall University picture with some additions as follows:

A budget of £140K for capital was requested, £100K has been allocated. Some of this years allocation is being allowed to be carried forward to enable better value to be gained and this will help us to keep on track with improvements. The HEFCE capital funding has been very helpful over the last few years to get us back to where we needed to be following significant under-funding. The general refurbishment money will not be available over the next two years as the HEFCE Teaching Capital money is to be used in its entirety on the James France developments.

Pool Room Developments

Pool Room Changes

Other Teaching Issues

We will investigate preference (voting) systems further. Now seen in use at Strathclyde University.

EHB still has some problems – lights, seats, use as multifunction room.

Space Management Group looking at use of pool rooms made by departments to possibly build into the overall space use of departments.

There will continue to be loss of rooms for teaching due to special events – Careers Fair, Graduation – departments will be advised of this when rooms are allocated.

Design and Production Services

These are going well with a high quality of service. The admissions tutors resource pack has been well received and is in use. Departments all “chipped in” to enable its development. External print prices for full colour work continue to be very competitive and generally of excellent quality. This complements the in-house print service, which focuses on corporate work, digital printing/copying (B&W and colour) and two colour litho printing.
