Background

A number of environmental management standards are in existence such as ISO 1401 and Eco – Campus but so far Loughborough University has not sought accreditation to any particular standard.

It is recognised however that there are benefits in reviewing performance against such benchmarks to establish areas of strength and weakness.

To this end an external review was arranged and Corporate Risk Systems were selected to carry out this review.  The reference standard for the analysis was Good Practice and ISO14001:2004 - ‘Environmental Management Systems.’

A report has been received and the findings are to be presented to EMG at the earliest opportunity.

HS and E committee will receive a fuller report on the findings once this is done. It should be noted that there are likely to be deficiencies in the existing management systems and remedial work is to be expected.

Other indicators, such as a self assessment exercise called Business in the Community Environmental Index have also suggested that there are areas of weakness in management systems and that a coherent response to this feedback is needed.
